GUIDING THROUGH THE YEARS | INVERBERVIE

A little glimpse of Guiding in Inverbervie in 1984–85…

In 1984, Inverbervie Brownies decided to form a second pack. Twelve months later, both packs were thriving — giving more local girls the opportunity to join Brownies when they turned seven, without having to wait on a waiting list.

The two packs joined together for special occasions, including a Halloween party, a Christmas pantomime in Montrose called “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, and a special ‘Mum and Me’ night.

Then they celebrated 75 years of Guiding…

The Brownies celebrated with Thinking Day activities, a new Brownie flag, a display of old photographs, books and badge work, and even a shop window display looking back over the years.

And one evening sounds particularly special…

On 25 June, the Brownies received their Flame of Friendship, cut their anniversary cake and enjoyed a barbecue and campfire on the beach.

They also raised funds for the newly formed 2nd Inverbervie Brownies by holding a sponsored shoe clean, aiming to clean 75 pairs of shoes!

They were very busy groups celebrating all of this alongside earning badges, getting outdoors, having sports nights, Easter egg competitions and plenty of fun.

GUIDING THROUGH THE YEARS | INVERBERVIE

We’ve found something rather special in the history of Guiding in Inverbervie…

This handwritten account book from 1927 gives us a little glimpse into what Guiding looked like nearly 100 years ago.

Among the entries are payments to the Scottish Girl Guides Association, the cost of a Guides book, and even expenses for tent poles and the hire of a tent! 🏕️

There are also payments for posters, stamps, stationery and the Kincardineshire Observer — giving us a lovely picture of a local Guide organisation being busy, organised and out and about in the community.

One entry even records an SGA voucher, showing that there was a formal connection with the Scottish Girl Guides Association.

Looking at this page makes us wonder about the Guides behind these entries.

Who were these girls? Where were they heading with their tent? Was this for a local camp or a trip further afield? Where did they meet, and what adventures did they have? And who was the person carefully keeping these accounts?

We’re hoping to uncover more as we continue exploring the history of Guiding in our local communities.

A little bit of local history…

Did you know that Girlguiding has been part of Inverbervie for over 100 years? 💙

The local Girlguiding unit celebrated its centenary in 2023, meaning Guiding in Bervie dates all the way back to around 1923.

Think about that for a moment… generations of girls from Inverbervie and the surrounding area have been meeting, making friends, learning new skills, having adventures and giving things a go.

And while the uniforms, badges and activities have changed enormously over the years, the heart of Guiding hasn’t changed quite so much — girls having fun, trying new things, building confidence and making memories together.

Today, we still have Rainbows, Brownies and Guides meeting in Inverbervie. 🌈🤎💙

So we’re starting a little series looking back at the history of Guiding across our local communities — and we’d love your help!

Do you have an old Guiding photograph, badge, uniform, newspaper cutting or a memory of Guiding in Inverbervie?

Maybe you, your mum, gran or even great-gran were involved?

Our Guide unit have been working hard to generate ideas on how they can help improve their community as part of Girlguiding Scotland ‘s “Wee Act, Big Impact”.

We would love to invite individuals and groups to join us so we can make an even bigger impact!

We will have litter pickers available at the Inverbervie Scout Hut for 19:15 and encourage you to litter pick the village.

If you can’t make it to Bervie we would love you to spend a little time picking up litter over Coastal South and beyond!

Thinking about volunteering with Girlguiding, but not quite sure what it involves?

Come along to our Volunteer Taster Session and have a nosey at what we get up to! There’s absolutely no pressure to sign up — it’s just a chance to come along, meet some local volunteers, ask questions and see if it might be something you’d enjoy.

We’ll have a few activities for you to try, chat about what volunteering actually looks like, and explain how joining works and what support you get.

And yes… there will be tea and biscuits! ☕

*Children are welcome too, so no need to worry about finding childcare.*

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m looking for a bit of help from our local community. Our Guides are wanting to get involved in a community project in October as part of a badge, but we want the girls to decide what they’d like to do themselves.

I’m looking for some ideas or suggestions of things they could get involved with around Catterline/Kinneff, St Cyrus and the surrounding areas.

It could be anything from helping a local group, doing something for the environment, supporting a charity, helping at a community event, tidying/improving an area, working with wildlife — really anything where a group of Guides could lend a hand and make a difference.

If you’re involved with a local group, project or know of something that might be suitable, please comment below or drop me a message.

We’ll put the ideas to the girls and let them decide what they’d like to take on.
