The origin of this theater's name comes from the 13th-century founding of the Celestine Order by a Neapolitan monk, Pierre de Mouron. On February 25, 1407, Amadeus VIII, Count of Savoy, founded the Celestine Convent of Lyon and granted them the necessary land. The convent was closed on September 30, 1778, by papal decree.
The deconsecrated church was bought by a private individual and, during the French Revolution, became a performance hall called the Thรฉรขtre des Variรฉtรฉs. The space was inaugurated on April 9, 1792. It quickly lost this name to the one we still know today. The theater was sold to the City of Lyon in 1838. However, during the night of April 1-2, 1871, a fire broke out and destroyed the building.
The City held a competition for its reconstruction, and the architect Gaspard Andrรฉ won. It was based on his plans and under his direction that the Thรฉรขtre des Cรฉlestins was rebuilt and expanded from 1874 to 1877. .~
