🚨 HDRI is proud to join Le fil de notre avenir ("The thread of our future"), a powerful manifesto launched by Coordination SUD and 200+ NGOs to defend international solidarity! 🌍🤝

France's public funding for international cooperation is facing an unprecedented crisis. 📉 Since 2021, the development aid budget has been slashed by a staggering 48%.

The human cost? Devastating. A new report by Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) estimates that these budget cuts could lead to over 3.5 million avoidable deaths by 2030. ⚠️

As a French CSO dedicated to research and advocacy around human development, we cannot stay silent. 🛑 We know firsthand that policy must be driven by data and a commitment to human rights. Slashing these critical funds dismantles global progress and threatens the world's most vulnerable communities.

International aid isn't just a budget line, it’s the foundation of a stable, equitable world. 🌱 We stand united with our fellow organizations to demand better.

🌍✨ HDRI at YEE's Summer University & General Assembly 2026!

July 9-12, our team joined the Youth and Environment Europec(YEE) in Prague for two major events:

🎓 Summer University (9–10 July) — workshops on Just Transition, energy literacy, climate justice, biodiversity, and greenwashing
🗳️ General Assembly (11–12 July) — YEE's highest decision-making gathering, bringing together 29+ member organisations from across Europe

Representing HDRI were our Migration & Security Research Coordinator Guglielmo Barbetta and our intern Sarka Neumannova 🙌 — proud to see our network's work reflected in these spaces!

We're also proud to share that HDRI has officially signed the Arzni Declaration on Transforming Environmental Conflicts 📜✍️, co-created in May by 25 young people from across Europe with support from the Council of Europe's European Youth Foundation. The declaration calls for ecological justice, youth participation in decision-making, and accountability for environmental destruction — values that sit at the heart of our own mission.

HDRI is excited to announce the release of our latest paper: "Reimagining Health Pluralism: The Role of Traditional Healers in Addressing the HIV and TB Syndemic in South Africa". Authored by Sithole kaMiya Nkosana and edited by Laura Coburn, this crucial study explores the necessity of integrating Indigenous knowledge into formal health structures.

As Southern Africa continues to battle the interlinked epidemics of HIV and TB, this paper argues that relying solely on biomedical interventions is not enough to achieve health equity.

Key Points from the Research:

🌍 Widespread Reliance: Over 70% of South Africans consult Traditional Health Practitioners (THPs), making them a central and trusted part of the healthcare ecosystem.
⚖️ Historical Marginalization: Colonial and apartheid-era legacies continue to delegitimize and exclude THPs from the formal biomedical health system.
🚨 Policy Blind Spots: South Africa's proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme largely overlooks THPs, a hospital-centric approach that risks reproducing deep structural inequalities.
🤝 Proven Success: Collaborative dual-referral models in KwaZulu-Natal prove that integrating THPs significantly improves HIV/TB case finding, treatment adherence, and stigma reduction.

The Human Development Research Initiative (HDRI) is thrilled to launch the Youth-Led Monitoring for a Resilient Digital France (YLM-RDF) project! 🚀 Running from April to mid-November 2026, we are proud to announce this as an official ECAS project, supported through the EURECA Plus 2026 grant program for ECAS members. 🇪🇺🤝

⚠️ The Challenge: France's EUR 18.6 billion digital roadmap faces critical gaps. 💶 Currently, only 62% of the population has basic digital skills (far below the 80% EU target), rural 5G access lags at 13.5%, and youth civil society voices have been largely excluded from policy drafting. 📉🚜

💡 Our Solution: Using the ECAS Civic Monitoring Methodology Framework, we are empowering young citizens (aged 16-24) to evaluate national digital policies.
🔍 We aim to transform youth experiences into actionable data to protect funding for France's 4,000 Digital Advisors and hold decision-makers accountable. ⚖️💻

🌊 HDRI at the Macro-regional & Sea Basin Strategies Days 2026

Last week, our President Gurgen Petrosyan represented Human Development Research Initiative (HDRI) in Brussels at the EU Macro-regional & Sea Basin Strategies Days — taking part in cooperation with the Youth4Ocean Forum, of which HDRI is a proud member.

Over two days, the eight EU macro-regional and sea basin strategies (Alpine, Danube, Adriatic-Ionian, Baltic, Atlantic, Western Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Greater North Sea) came together to discuss what comes next: post-2027 programming, the future MFF, and how cross-border cooperation can move from talking to delivering.

HDRI's stand throughout: young people are not a side conversation in ocean and sea basin governance — we are stakeholders who live with the consequences of the decisions made today. As Europe reshapes its funding frameworks and resilience priorities, meaningful youth participation, transparent governance, and long-term investment in coastal and marine communities have to be built in from the start, not added on afterwards.

Grateful to be in the room, and to keep pushing for a Europe where sea basin cooperation includes the generation that will inherit it. 💙

🌍 Big news: HDRI is officially part of the EU's Zero Pollution Stakeholder Platform!

Alongside civil society organisations, businesses, and experts from across all 27 EU Member States, HDRI has been selected by the European Commission to help shape the future of the Zero Pollution Action Plan 🇪🇺

This means a seat at the table where policy on clean air, water, and soil gets made — and a chance to make sure young people's voices are part of that conversation.

We are thrilled to share that the Human Development Research Initiative (HDRI) has received over 200 internship applications from talented and passionate young people across the world for our September–November 2026 and November 2026–January 2027 Internship Cohorts.

The remarkable level of interest reflects the growing commitment of young people to advancing human rights, sustainability, democracy, global health, migration, gender equality, and social justice.

Our team is currently reviewing applications and conducting interviews. We are grateful to every applicant who chose HDRI as part of their professional journey.

Last week, HDRI attended the Tech Diplomacy Global Forum at UNESCO in Paris, a timely and insightful event bringing together diplomats, UN officials, and representatives from industry and civil society to reflect on the evolving role of cyber diplomacy and tech ambassadorship.

It was particularly interesting to hear how different speakers framed the growing importance of tech diplomacy as a field that sits at the intersection of foreign policy, digital governance, and international cooperation.

A recurring theme throughout the discussions was the value of inclusive, multi-stakeholder approaches to AI and technology governance. Several speakers shared examples of how civil society has already contributed meaningfully to the development of shared standards and governance frameworks, helping ensure that these discussions reflect a broad range of perspectives and real social needs.

At HDRI, we strongly believe that civil society should be part of these conversations from the outset. Standards and rules that shape the digital environment should be informed by the full range of stakeholders, including institutions, experts, civil society, and the private sector, so that they are both effective and broadly grounded in the public interest.
