E.X.H.I.B.I.T.I.O.N

The Radiance of All Things: Retrospective of Chu Teh-Chun opens at the Art Museum of China Academy of Art.

The words “Radiance of All Things” bring together two ideas: “radiance” evokes the imagery of light in Western art, while “all things” is rooted in the Eastern view of the cosmos. Together, they point to a transcendent light that reaches beyond East and West and speaks to a universal spirit.

The exhibition brings together approximately 260 significant works and archival materials from across Chu Teh-Chun’s life, including 107 of his oil paintings.

J-10 | CHU TEH-CHUN . RETURN TO HANGZHOU

A RETURN TO HIS ROOTS AT THE HEART OF THE CHINA ACADEMY OF ART — RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION — 19 OCTOBER 2026 – 18 FEBRUARY 2027

Memories of Chu Teh-Chun as a 15-Year-Old Student at the Hangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.

Chu Teh-Chun :
" We’d wake up early, often before dawn, grind ink and paint traditional ink paintings, before breakfast. After eating, we’d spend about four hours in the studio drawing. In the afternoons, we’d have two hours of classes, then head outside to paint landscapes and watercolors — Wu Guanzhong and I together. Every Saturday, we’d take our painting boxes and spend the entire day outdoors. Hangzhou has so many beautiful scenes that we could easily finish several watercolor paintings in a single day. Back then, we simply loved painting; there was no talk of becoming professional artists or anything like that. We just enjoyed it and kept painting."

At the time, Hangzhou Academy of Art was the most avant-garde school in China, truly embodying the “French school” style. Its principal was Lin Fengmian, who would later become a world-renowned painter.
He was highly effective in laying a solid foundation in painting for his students. He gave Chu Teh-Chun the opportunity to study Western classical disciplines at Hangzhou Academy of Art, including perspective, color theory, and artistic anatomy. Chu was also exposed to avant-garde movements such as Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism.

🇬🇧 DID YOU KNOW?

Chu Teh-Chun’s notebooks

From 1958–1959, Chu Teh-Chun began reproducing his paintings and gouaches in small format in spiral-bound sketchbooks, adding technical details carefully recorded by his wife, Thérèse.

The Foundation preserves around ten of these precious notebooks, which form a unique visual record of his work.

Chu eventually replaced these hand-made records with Ektachrome transparencies, once he considered their quality sufficient.

For the major retrospective at the Museum of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, these archives will be presented through high-definition digital reproductions made from the original notebooks.

See you in Hangzhou! 🇨🇳

🇬🇧 One Day, One Painting

Chu Teh-Chun — Autumn, 1985

At the beginning of autumn, the light changes, colours transform, and the landscape becomes quieter.
In this diptych from 1985, Chu Teh-Chun brings light, matter and movement into dialogue. Forms seem to dissolve into an almost musical atmosphere, somewhere between Western abstraction and the sensibility of Chinese ink painting.

Autumn evokes less a landscape than a sensation: that of a world in transformation, suspended between light and silence.

A work in which colour becomes space, and every gesture reveals a new depth.

🇫🇷 Un jour, un tableau

Chu Teh-Chun — Automne, 1985
