ANOTHER EAGLE DEATH IN BOSTON METRO DUE TO ANTICOAGULANTS!
Last night I was informed of the terrible news: another MA eagle had died of SGARs. However, this eagle died this spring in Natick--THE SAME WEEK AS FAE--and her body was found barely 24 hours after FAE's.
To add even more tragedy to this news, this bald eagle was a BREEDING FEMALE who looked like she was getting ready to breed/lay eggs--meaning her passing also indicates we were deprived of her progeny--the next generation of eagles to build up the population.
To have TWO EAGLES die of SGARs in the area only a day or two apart--TWO BREEDING FEMALES IN THEIR PRIME--is a startling thing that should impress upon us and our ELECTED LEADERS of the gravity and urgency of this issue.
Why did we even try after DDT to recover these magnificent birds if we were just going to poison them ALL OVER AGAIN with a different chemical? Do we as a species every really learn from our mistakes? Will our politicians STEP UP and do the right thing and protect our wildlife and our eagles (which are STILL MESA LISTED)?
Speaking personally and not for anyone else, I am curious why the state did not disclose this bald eagle's passing to the news or the public. We need to know. It is only by knowing the truth that we can make the appropriate policy decisions.
This eagle was only discovered by happenstance from a public records request file by Joanne Dawson to the state.
If you live in Natick PLEASE contact your Select Board and Town Meeting members and implore them to join their many municipal neighbors in banning the use of anticoagulants on their public properties (last I checked a couple of years back, Natick did use SGARs on their properties) and in filing a Home Rule petition to ban outright in their borders.
Also, Natick residents and neighbors, PLEASE CALL your state Senator Senate President Karen E. Spilka and demand that she do whatever she can to usher the HAWKINS BILL to become state law. Spilka is the SENATE PRESIDENT and one of the big heavy hitters in the state legislature with sway on this issue--but she needs to hear from her own constituents. Her number is (617) 722-1500.
