Before St Brigid's Day became part of Christian Ireland, the beginning of February marked one of the great turning points of the ancient Irish year: Imbolc.

Traditionally associated with 1 February, Imbolc marked the beginning of spring, a time when the darkest days of winter were beginning to retreat and new life was returning to the land.

The festival became closely associated with Brigid. In Irish tradition, Brigid appears both as an important pre-Christian goddess and, later, as one of Ireland's most beloved saints.

The goddess Brigid was associated with poetry, healing, craftsmanship and fertility, while St Brigid became surrounded by traditions involving sacred wells, fire, protection and the coming of spring.

Even today, echoes of these older traditions survive.

Brigid's crosses are woven from rushes, visits are made to holy wells, and Lá Fhéile Bríde continues to mark the arrival of spring in Ireland.

Imbolc is a fascinating example of how ancient belief, folklore and Christianity became intertwined over centuries.
