Fasi ‘a Fafine - Meet the Mentors
Fasi ‘a Fafine is taking place from 14 September in Tonga and we are calling out to women with a talent and passion for music performance, sound engineering, songwriting, storytelling, and film-making. The project team and mentors will provide support throughout Fasi ‘a Fafine and the aim is to produce and release an album of stunning Tongan songs through Wantok Musik. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of this women’s album and work with these incredible mentors:
Mia Kami is a Tongan singer/songwriter & educator. She is passionate about youth & community development, the importance of education and the power of Pacific people as guardians & stewards of Oceania. She channels her passions into songwriting & uses her music to tell her stories as a young Pacific woman. She believes that art is the strongest form of storytelling that can connect her Pacific communities to their ancestors & their descendants. With a growing love for education, Mia is also navigating ways to incorporate her decade of experiences in climate & ocean conservation spaces into formal education systems.

Aubrie Mitchell is an artist, songwriter, producer, and audio engineer from Auckland, New Zealand, whose work sits at the intersection of pop, electronica, and indie. She brings both technical precision and creative sensitivity to every project. Aubrie previously served as Studio Manager at BIG FAN - the community-driven music space founded by Joel Little; before moving into Golden Age Studios, the studio where Lorde’s debut album was created. Aubrie has collaborated with leading NZ and international artists including Rita Ora, Brooke Ligertwood, Prateek Kuhad, and many more, building a reputation as both a trusted collaborator and an emerging artist in her own right.

Pā'utu-'O-Vava'u-Lahi Dr Adriana Māhanga Lear is a Tongan-Australian interdisciplinary sound and visual artist, musician and composer/producer, and researcher and educator in Pacific arts and cultural development. Adriana holds ancestral ties to Tu'anuku, Vava'u and Vaipoa, Niuatoputapu.

Beatrice Lewis: Beatrice Lewis is an electronic music producer, songwriter and performer working across composition, performance and interdisciplinary collaboration. She is a member of internationally acclaimed dance punk act Haiku Hands and award-winning Indigenous project Kardajala Kirridarra, while also developing her solo practice.

New dates have been confirmed for the Fasi ’a Fafine programme, Music for Change: Pacific Women-which are: 14 September - 3 October. The project provides the opportunity to empower women in music, focusing on music performance, sound engineering, songwriting, storytelling, and film-making.
Supporting from Tonga are Project Manager ‘Ofa Guttenbeil Likiliki and Project Support Mia Kami. The mentors from Australia and NZ are Aubrie Mitchell, Adriana Māhanga Lear and Beatrice Lewis. We are excited to bring this collective team together and are looking forward to combining all of their experience and expertise. Helele – Hendrikus Fahik & Angelo Cardoso
Hamoris Lian Timor - HLT Reviving the Sound of Timor, a project facilitated by Wantok Musik. Hendrikus and Angelo travelled four hours from Suai in the back of a rusty ute just to record this song in Maubisse. They arrived, set up, and delivered an absolutely electric one‑take performance, full of heart, culture and pure brilliance. Then they jumped straight back in the ute and made the long trip home. Dedication at its finest. Helele is a joyful Timorese welcome song traditionally sung at weddings-a celebration of togetherness, family and community

Proud to see this powerful Pasifika installation screening at Scienceworks as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival. The soundtrack features artists from Wantok Musik, with the music curated by David Bridie. The film screens in August, and both screenings will be followed by a special Q&A with Pwo (Master Navigator) Peia Patai and director Tom Murray.
The discussion will be facilitated by Jade Nathan Hadfield (Ngāti Kahungunu & Ngāti Whātua), Curator, Moana Wan-Solwara Collection, First Peoples – Research and Collections Department, Museums Victoria Research Institute.

Sharing some more photos from the Meri Singsing Strong Project in Buka. The foundation of the project is about providing Pacific women with the opportunity to participate, upskill and creatively express themselves through music. The participating women, mentors and project team have been making the most of their time together, spending each day writing, collaborating, sharing knowledge and recording new songs. The photos have captured the trust and connection of this group and the collaborations that have been taking place. We can’t wait to hear the music they have created together.
