Every year, 232 million tourists visit the Mediterranean — and many will be enjoying whether they know it or not. Chris Rostron, MedWet Coordinator, is on holiday in and explains how we all depend on wetlands — for relaxation, spiritual connection, and cultural value. To reduce our impact as tourists, we need to respect and protect them.

For example, you can:
- take your waste and litter home with you
- respect protected areas to reduce disturbance to wildlife
- invest in local eco-tourism activities
- join a campaign to save a wetland that you visit
- monitor wildlife as part of a citizen science programme

🌿 Thank you for joining our Information Webinar on the Ramsar Wetland City Accreditation!

On 25 June 2026, MedWet brought together 48 participants from across the Mediterranean and beyond for an engaging webinar dedicated to strengthening the participation of Mediterranean cities in the Ramsar Wetland City Accreditation.

The webinar highlighted how the accreditation recognises cities that are committed to protecting and sustainably managing their wetlands while improving the quality of life of their communities.

Throughout the session, participants explored:

🔹 The role of MedWet and the Ramsar Independent Advisory Committee on Wetland Cities
🔹 The Wetland City Accreditation process, including its history, criteria and timeline
🔹 The benefits of accreditation and the global Wetland City Network
🔹 The role of the MedCities Network in supporting sustainable urban development
🔹 Inspiring experiences from accredited Wetland Cities, including Ghar El Melh (Tunisia) and Amiens (France)
🔹 An interactive discussion on opportunities for future candidate cities across the Mediterranean

We were delighted to receive very positive feedback from participants, reflecting the richness of the presentations and discussions. We hope this webinar will inspire more Mediterranean cities to embark on the accreditation journey and contribute to a stronger regional network of Wetland Cities.

🌍 The current call for applications is open until 31 December 2026, offering cities the opportunity to prepare their applications for consideration ahead of the announcement of the next accredited Wetland Cities at Ramsar COP16 in 2028.

To date, 74 cities worldwide have received this accreditation, including 14 cities in the Mediterranean region. With the current call for applications open until 31 December 2026, this represents a valuable opportunity for Mediterranean cities to join this growing global network and showcase their efforts in wetland conservation and sustainable urban development.

In this context, is organising this webinar to:
• Present the Ramsar Wetland City Accreditation scheme, its criteria, and application process
• Share experiences and lessons learned from accredited cities
• Highlight regional and global initiatives supporting Wetland Cities
• Encourage and support Mediterranean cities interested in applying for accreditation
