On 7 May 2026, organised the regional webinar “Financing Wetland Conservation and Restoration in the Mediterranean: Strategies, Donors and Innovative Models”, bringing together organisations, wetland managers, donors and practitioners from across the Mediterranean region.

The webinar created a space to exchange on:

💧 funding opportunities for wetland conservation and restoration
🌿 innovative financing models and donor priorities
🤝 strengthening collaboration between project leaders and funding institutions

A big thank you to all speakers and participants for their insights and engagement, including representatives from:

🔸 Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco
🔸 UICN - Centre de coopération pour la Méditerranée
🔸 Office français de la biodiversité (OFB)
🔸 Wildfowl & Wetland Trust (WWT)
🔸 Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF)

Mediterranean wetlands remain among the most threatened ecosystems globally, while playing a critical role in biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, water security and local livelihoods. Strengthening access to funding and partnerships is therefore essential to support local actors working on their protection and restoration.

Thank you again to everyone who joined us and contributed to these important discussions.

Farewell to Thymio Papayannis, Founding Father of MedWet

It is with great sadness that we learned of Thymio’s passing this week.

He was a visionary in many aspects of the Mediterranean environment and culture, and the founder, alongside Luc Hoffmann, of our MedWet initiative.

His outstanding commitment, his capacity to engage in dialogue with all stakeholders, and his sense of diplomacy were instrumental in setting up MedWet.

Through the initiatives he founded and contributed to, he played a key role in redefining wetland conservation in the Mediterranean as something inseparable from culture, heritage, and local communities.

We are deeply grateful for all that he achieved for MedWet, for , and for people.

Chris Rostron, MedWet Coordinator, attended The Convention on Wetlands’ 67th Standing Committee meeting (SC67) in Gland.

👉 SC67 covered key issues such as the budget and the strategic plan, while also presenting reports on the Ramsar Regional Initiatives (RRIs), CEPA, Culture & , and much more.

Chris took the chance to meet with Secretary General Dr Musonda Mumba, senior regional representatives at the Secretariat, and MedWet members from France, Morocco, and Italy.

He also met with RRIs from East Asia and the Americas to discuss the next COP18 in Panama.

Overall, it was an excellent opportunity to promote MedWet, strengthen connections, and align activities with the Convention’s plans for this triennium.
