On day 2 of the Second National Anticipatory Action Workshop, participants worked together to identify priority actions that can be taken before disasters occur.

Through group discussions, government agencies, humanitarian partners and technical experts reviewed different activities and assessed whether they could realistically be implemented within 120-hour and 72-hour warning windows ahead of forecast hazards.

The workshop also looked at how early warning messages can be improved to help communities understand risks and act in time to reduce potential impacts.

These discussions are an important step towards strengthening disaster preparedness and ensuring that early warnings lead to early action in Vanuatu.

On 4 June 2026, the UN OCHA Office of the Pacific Islands met with the Embassy of Japan in Vanuatu to discuss early action, preparedness, response coordination, and humanitarian financing across the region.

The focus is shifting from responding after impact to acting earlier โ€” using forecasts, risk data, and preparedness systems to reduce humanitarian consequences before disasters escalate.

Highlights from the discussion included:

โ€ข Progress on Vanuatu's Anticipatory Action Framework

โ€ข Strengthening OCHA's operational presence in Vanuatu

โ€ข Japan's support to the Typhoon Sinlaku response through UNDAC deployment

โ€ข Continued engagement on humanitarian financing and regional pooled funds

This dialogue reflects a shared commitment to a more proactive Pacific โ€” where preparedness is not reactive, but built into the system. ๐ŸŒ

Last week, the UN OCHA Office of the Pacific Islands met with the Deputy High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Vanuatu to discuss how we can strengthen disaster preparedness, anticipatory action, humanitarian financing, and humanitarian coordination across the Pacific.

In a region highly exposed to cyclones, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other hazards, preparedness is one of the most effective investments we can make to protect lives and livelihoods.

Our discussions focused on:

โœจ Strengthening anticipatory action and disaster preparedness.

๐Ÿšข Enhancing humanitarian coordination and civil-military cooperation.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Securing predictable financing to support timely, locally led action.

๐ŸŒ Supporting Pacific-led solutions that help communities prepare for and respond to disasters.

We are also deeply grateful for the United Kingdom's generous and timely contribution to the South Pacific envelope of the Regional Humanitarian Pooled Fund for Asia and the Pacific. This support has enabled NGO participation in the development of the collective Anticipatory Action Framework for Tropical Cyclones in Vanuatu and supported rapid humanitarian response by NGOs following Tropical Cyclone Maila in Solomon Islands.

Strong partnerships help ensure that assistance reaches communities when it is needed most. Thank you to the United Kingdom for its continued support for humanitarian action and resilience-building across the Pacific. ๐Ÿค
