Strengthening Partnerships for Inclusive Leadership

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Sashi Kiran, recently met with representative from Pasifika Communities University (PCU), Director of Centre for Gender and Social Justice - CGSJ Ms. Emele Duituturaga, to explore opportunities for collaboration, learning, and community development. Also present was the Ministry's Acting Permanent Secretary, Ms. Selina Kuruleca.

A key highlight of the meeting was the discussion on Pasifika Communities University's academic programmes, including the Bachelor of Ecumenism, Bachelor of Divinity, and Master of Theology. Equally important was the exploration of how PCU can partner with the Ministry to support programmes that promote healing, restoration, and transformation for individuals and communities facing social challenges. The conversation focused on building pathways from brokenness to wholeness, strengthening resilience, restoring dignity, and empowering people to rebuild their lives through education, faith-based learning, and community-centred support. Director Emele also presented the 2025 report, ReSTORYing Gender for Transformative Leadership for Justice: A Niu Pasifika Gender Paradigm, which offers fresh Pacific perspectives on gender, leadership, and social justice.

Discussions underscored the value of education, research, and meaningful dialogue in nurturing inclusive leadership and building stronger, more resilient communities across Fiji.

Southern coastal areas of Yasawa and Mamanuca

What to Expect
Rain and thunderstorms across most of Fiji, becoming heavier and more frequent from later today.
Localised heavy rain may cause flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Strong easterly to northeasterly winds of 40 to 55 km/h, with gusts up to 65 km/h.
Rough to very rough seas.
Coastal flooding is possible in vulnerable coastal areas, especially during high tide.
Navua, Suva and Nausori
Strong northeasterly winds of 40 to 55 km/h, with gusts up to 65 km/h.
Rain and thunderstorms becoming heavy from later today.
Temperatures between 22°C and 27°C.
Outlook for Wednesday
Weather expected to improve, with brief showers in some areas and mainly fine conditions elsewhere.
Strong winds will continue in parts of Viti Levu, Kadavu, Lomaiviti, Moala, and the Southern Lau Group.
Seas will remain moderate to rough.

Residents are advised to stay alert, avoid flooded areas, secure loose items, and monitor weather updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness day. Between 2019 and 2030, the global population of people aged 60 years and over is expected to increase by 38%, growing from 1 billion to 1.4 billion people. As our population ages, more attention must be given to the rights, wellbeing, safety, and dignity of older persons.

In Pacific communities, elders play a vital role as custodians of culture, language, faith, traditions, and family knowledge. Yet elder abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and social isolation often remain hidden and underreported.

The Pacific Dataviz Challenge 2026 is now open, inviting people of all ages and experience levels to turn climate change data into powerful visual stories. Running from 1 June to 31 August, the challenge encourages participants from school students to experienced data analysts to explore Pacific open data and create engaging infographics, dashboards, and other visualisations that highlight the real impacts and trends of climate change across the region.
It's a unique opportunity to combine creativity, data, and storytelling to raise awareness of one of the Pacific’s most important challenges.

The Ministry of Health & Medical Services in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries are urging Fijians to take precautionary measures when out at sea with the presence of Box Jellyfish - a poisonous and venomous jellyfish.
The Ministry of Health & Medical Services is concerned after a number of patients have been presented to the Ministry's Hyperbaric Unit with breathing problems after being out at sea.
Members of the public are urged to take proper heed of this advisory and to visit your nearest healthcare facility should you have any signs and symptoms.

TROPICAL CYCLONE UPDATE OF THE HOUR:

Tropical Cyclone VAIANU has now been upgraded to a SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE CATEGORY 3 system.

While the system has intensified, its forecast track and expected impacts remain consistent with previous forecasts and warnings issued.

The Fiji Meteorological Service will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates as necessary. We strongly advise the public to remain vigilant, stay informed, and take all necessary precautions.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

• Tropical Cyclone Vaianu is now a Category 2 system and may intensify to Category 3 within 18–24 hours
• It is not expected to make direct landfall, but its impacts will still affect all of Fiji
• The system is moving slowly, increasing the risk of prolonged heavy rain, flash flooding, and landslides
• Expect strong winds and rough seas across the country
• A Heavy Rain Warning and Flash Flood Alert are in force nationwide
CURRENT SITUATION
• A few evacuation centres are active in the Eastern Division
• More may open if conditions worsen
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
• Stay alert and be ready to move to higher ground
• Do NOT cross flooded roads or rivers
• Secure your home and belongings
• Avoid unnecessary travel
• Stay away from the sea
• Check on elderly, children, and vulnerable persons
• Farmers: move livestock to safer areas

SPECIAL WEATHER BULLETIN NUMBER TWELVE FOR HEAVY RAIN ISSUED FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER FORECASTING CENTRE, NADI AT 04:30AM ON MONDAY, 6TH OF APRIL, 2026.
HEAVY RAIN WARNING
A HEAVY RAIN WARNING REMAINS IN FORCE FOR THE THE ENTIRE FIJI GROUP.
Situation: Tropical Cyclone Vaianu 990HPA Category 1 was analysed at 610km west northwest of Yasawa at 4am today, moving southeast at about 9km/hr. The trough of low pressure associated with Vaianu lies over the Fiji group. Associated cloud, showers and rain are expected to affect the group for the next few days.
Forecast for Fiji group:
Occasional to periods of rain, heavy at times and few thunderstorms.
Forecast confidence: Moderate to High.
Possible impacts:
Flash flooding of flood prone low-lying informal settlements/communities, businesses and Irish crossings leading to traffic disruptions.
Surface flooding on streets in urban areas with poor drainage.
Wet roads and reduced visibility, especially during heavy downpours, increasing the risk of road accidents.
Significant 24hrs Rainfall
