*Fiji Council of Churches Advances Constitutional Review Submission*
The Fiji Council of Churches (FCC) recently concluded a two-day consultation on the review of the 2013 Constitution under the theme *"Faithful Witness for a Just and Peaceful Fiji."*

The consultation brought together a majority of the church leaders of the 15 member churches of the FCC, theologians, and legal experts to reflect on the Constitution through legal, theological, and spiritual perspectives. The FCC affirmed positive constitutional provisions relating to human dignity, equal citizenship, religious freedom, socio-economic rights, labour rights, and environmental stewardship.

The Council also identified key areas requiring review, including immunity provisions, concentration of executive power, human rights protections, reconciliation mechanisms, military oversight, and customary ownership of natural resources.

The FCC's recommendations seek to strengthen accountability, truth and reconciliation, democratic governance, environmental protection, civic education, and the protection of families and fundamental freedoms.

The Council reaffirmed its support for Fiji remaining a secular state that guarantees freedom of religion for all faith communities.

The draft submission is now being circulated to faith-based leaders throughout Fiji for feedback before its final submission to the Constitutional Review Commission.

πŸ™Prayer for Teachers and Students During the Cold Weather:

Loving God,
We pray for all teachers, students, and school communities across Fiji during this period of cold weather and school closures. Grant them warmth, health, and protection. Keep children safe in their homes, strengthen parents and caregivers, and give wisdom to school leaders and teachers as they care for the wellbeing of their students.

May those who are unwell find healing, those affected by the weather find comfort, and all families know Your peace and presence. We ask Your blessing upon our nation and pray for brighter days ahead.

In Jesus' name we pray.

Amen. πŸ™πŸ½πŸ‡«πŸ‡―

The Minister for Education, Honourable Aseri Radrodro, in consultation with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) and the Fiji Meteorological Service, has been closely monitoring the evolving weather situation across the country.

While earlier assessments indicated that schools could operate as normal, the latest weather forecasts and reports recently received point to a significant deterioration in conditions overnight. Persistent heavy rainfall, strong winds, coastal inundation, and flooding continue to affect many parts of Fiji, with several flood-prone areas already impacted and further flooding expected this morning.

With the safety and wellbeing of students, teachers, and school communities as the Ministry's highest priority, all schools throughout Fiji will be closed today, Tuesday 16 June. Tertiary institutions are encouraged to make their own decisions based on the situation.

The Education Minister said that this precautionary decision has been made to minimise unnecessary travel and reduce the risk to students, teachers, and families as weather conditions remain unpredictable. He strongly urges parents and guardians to keep children safely at home and not to attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges, creeks, or rivers, or travel through affected areas.

Heads of Schools are requested to remain in close communication with their School Management Committees and District Education Offices, continue monitoring local conditions, and report any weather-related impacts to school facilities through the appropriate channels.

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the NDRMO, the Fiji Meteorological Service, and other relevant authorities, will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates as conditions evolve. Further advice on the reopening of schools will be issued when it is safe to do so.

Hon. Radrodro thanked parents, guardians, school leaders, teachers, students, and the wider public for their understanding, cooperation, and continued support, emphasizing that the the decision was made with the safety and the wellbeing of Fiji’s children and school communities as the highest priority.

Day 1 of the Fiji Council of Churches (FCC) Consultation on the Review of the 2013 Fiji Constitution, hosted at the Salvation Army Hall, McGregor Road, Suva, opened with a powerful devotion led by Methodist Church President, Rev. Dr. Semisi Turagavou.
Drawing from Scripture, he reminded participants that the Church is called to offer a Spirit-led and prophetic contribution to the constitutional reviewβ€”one that promotes justice, dignity, reconciliation, and the common good for all people in Fiji.

The day's sessions focused on understanding the history and development of the 2013 Constitution, followed by a legal assessment presented by Fijian lawyer, Mr Graham Leung.

This was followed by sessions focusing on a Theological Assessment, led by Head of the Archdiocese of Suva and FCC President, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong.

Through group discussions, participants identified three key theological convictions:
πŸ”ΉοΈthat power must be accountable
πŸ”ΉοΈjustice must recognize truth
πŸ”ΉοΈand human dignity is inherent.

There was strong agreement that the Church's role is to be prophetic rather than privileged.

As Day One concluded, participants affirmed a threefold call for the constitutional review process:
πŸ”ΉοΈto affirm what is good, πŸ”ΉοΈstrengthen what is weak πŸ”ΉοΈremove what is unjust.

The consultation continues tomorrow as church leaders further discern their collective Christian witness and contribution to Fiji's constitutional future through the process of Spiritual Conversations, praying, listening and discernment.
