There is no perfect family. We do not have perfect parents, we are not perfect, we do not marry a perfect person or have perfect children.

We have complaints from each other. We disappoint each other. So there is no healthy marriage or healthy family without the exercise of forgiveness.

Forgiveness is vital to our emotional health and spiritual survival. Without forgiveness the family becomes an arena of conflict and a stronghold of hurt.

Without forgiveness, the family becomes ill. Forgiveness is the asepsis of the soul, the cleansing of the mind and the liberation of the heart.

Whoever does not forgive does not have peace in the soul nor communion with God. Hurt is poison that intoxicates and kills.

Keeping heartache in the heart is a self-destructive gesture. It's autophagy. Those who do not forgive are physically, emotionally and spiritually ill.

Parents are the children's source of life. They are there to protect their sons and daughters and not to compete with them.

That is why the family must be a place of life, not of death; Territory of cure and not of illness; Stage of forgiveness and not guilt. Forgiveness brings joy where sorrow has produced sadness; Healing, where sorrow has caused disease.

Forward to all families you know.

The Ministry of Women, JICA, Children and Social Protection held a successful Nasinu Elderly Recreational Day to honor senior citizens. This initiative, led by Minister Sashi Kiran, aims to create inclusive spaces with activities, food, and social interaction for the elderly. Senior citizens enjoyed music, health screenings, and information on social protection programs. Following successful events in Suva and Labasa, the Ministry will continue these initiatives nationwide to enrich the lives of older persons.

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of a collaborative community outreach program in Kalabu and Wakanisila, organized by the District Council for Older Persons - Nasinu. This initiative, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Welfare, Fiji Police Force, St. Giles representatives, and dedicated Community Health Workers, focused on providing accessible services to our senior citizens and people living with disabilities. By bringing crucial services directly to their doorsteps, we aimed to address their immediate needs and enhance their quality of life. We thank all participating stakeholders and the residents for their support and engagement.

The District Council for Older Persons in Nasinu is deeply concerned about the increasing instances of elder neglect and abandonment. Our programs have revealed heartbreaking stories of seniors being viewed as burdens, leading to isolation and hardship.

Key Issues and Proposed Solutions:

Strengthening Legal Frameworks:

We advocate for a comprehensive review of existing legislation and policies to explicitly address family care responsibilities.
Laws should be reinforced to empower older persons to seek legal recourse against neglectful children, including the ability to reclaim transferred assets in cases of abuse or abandonment.
This aims to protect seniors who, in good faith, transfer property to their children, only to face mistreatment.

Enhancing Service Awareness:
Many seniors are unaware of available support services. We propose widespread public awareness campaigns to disseminate information about helplines and resources.
While the 1325 Child Helpline is known, similar resources must be promoted specifically for elder care.

Improving Accessibility and Support:
Age-care facilities and individuals with disabilities require greater support, including access to essential aids like wheelchairs and shower chairs, and the installation of shower railings.
We propose a financial allowance for full-time home caregivers to recognize and support their invaluable contributions.
Urban planning must prioritize accessibility. Buildings should be designed with wheelchair ramps, and public transportation, particularly bus services, should invest in wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

Community-Driven Funding:
We encourage the formation of committed community groups to support senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers.
A sustainable funding model, such as a monthly donation program, can generate significant resources for vital services. For example, 2000 people donating $5 per month would generate $10,000 monthly.

Collaboration and Engagement:
We are actively collaborating with the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Sashi Kiran, to implement monthly activities that bring joy, love, and care to senior citizens in Nasinu.

Call to Action:

We urge the community, policymakers, and service providers to join us in our mission to ensure the dignity, respect, and well-being of our senior citizens. Let us work together to create a society where aging is embraced and supported.
