The Coalition Government is developing a National Blue Town Framework (NBTF), an integrated blueprint for sustainable township development.
Minister for Housing and Local Government, Hon. Maciu Nalumisa, said with the backing of the United Nations Development Programmeโs Investing in Coral Reefs and the Blue Economy (ICRBE) Project and under the direction of a multi-ministry taskforce, the framework seeks to establish elevated standards for environmental and ocean protection in towns.
โThe proposed framework will become the guide for all new town developmentsโincluding Nabouwalu, Keiyasi, Seaqaqa, and future growth centres such as Korovou and Waimacia, Vunidawa, Dreketi, Navua, and Taveuni.
โHe said this ensures that we do not merely build infrastructure but cultivate sustainable, climate-resilient towns that uphold both economic prosperity and environmental stewardship.
He added that in 2018 the programme commenced with three pilot growth centres, including Nabouwalu, Keiyasi, and Seaqaqa, which were selected based on their strategic locations, existing economic activity, and potential to catalyse broader regional development.
