17th of April marks the World Haemophilia Day worldwide.

Haemophilia is a genetic disorder that interferes with factor VIII and factor IX production. This, depending on the severity, can lead to joint bleeds, spontaneous bleeds, common injuries bleeding for longer and requiring medical treatment, and potential for fatality if not managed well.

Fiji has treated bleeding disorders in several ways, with most common method being the cryoprecipitate transfusion. This requires hospitalisation and close monitoring as some patients develop reactions to such treatments.

The Fiji Haemophilia Foundation was incepted in 2018 with the goal of introducing better healthcare for Haemophilia patients in Fiji. Since then, Fiji Haemophilia Foundation has been able to supply factor VIII and factor IX, a lifesaving treatment, to patients to the best of its and its donors' abilities, helping improve the quality of treatment given to patients. The Fiji Haemophilia Foundation will continue to work with stakeholders and donors to improve factor supply further. FHF will continue to work with local and international authorities to elevate the standards in Fiji through advocacy, training, and patient support.

Official statement from FHF President to be announced later today to commemorate World Haemophilia Day.

Thank you!

Keep safe, Fiji.

Dear Doctors,

We extend our deepest respect and gratitude for the life-saving work you do every day.

This message comes with humility and urgency. For patients relying on Factor VIII, every vial is precious—often limited, costly, and critical to their survival and quality of life. Small steps in preparation and administration can make a significant difference in preserving its full efficacy and preventing unnecessary loss.

We kindly ask for your continued care and attention during infusion—ensuring gentle handling, secure connections, and slow administration. These moments, though routine in practice, carry immense weight for those who depend on this treatment.

Your diligence not only safeguards the medication but also protects the wellbeing and dignity of your patients.

Thank you for your compassion, precision, and unwavering commitment to care.

Happy Holi to all celebrating. Wishing all a joyful festivities. Stay safe!

Fiji Haemophilia Foundation would like to extend its sincerest gratitude to all involved in the success of the Hemophilia Organisation Twinning program with Haemophilia New Zealand. Since 2022, HNZ has worked with FHF in capacity building, mentorship and provided assistance and guidance.

FHF is truly grateful for the assistance and guidance provided through the past 3 years as HOT partners, and the assistance rendered outside of the twinning program as well. Special thanks to Mr Deon and all members of HNZ.

FHF would like to thank its board members who have worked tirelessly to bring FHF to greater heights.

We are always willing to collaborate and work with HNZ and other partners to bridge the gaps in Haemophilia care in Fiji.

It's our birthday! 8 years ago today, the Fiji Haemophilia Foundation was incepted through the initiative of Kunaal Mark Prasad, founder and president, and support from Save One Life, L.A Kelley Communications Inc, and many local and international stakeholders.

For the past 8 years we have been able to provide lifesaving recombinant factor VIII and other coagulation medication to patients with haemophilia thanks to the tireless efforts of all involved, especially international donors and board members of FHF.

Fiji Haemophilia Foundation would like to express its sincerest gratitude to everyone involved in the past and the present. We have come a long way with factor distribution and patient-care advocacy; uplifting healthcare standards for bleeders in Fiji.

🩸 Living with haemophilia? Your diet matters more than you think.

While food can’t cure haemophilia, the right choices can help reduce bleeding risks and protect your joints long-term.

🚫 Limit alcohol and avoid aspirin/NSAIDs
⚖️ Be cautious with blood-thinning supplements
🍟 Reduce sugary & processed foods
🥬 Focus on iron, calcium, vitamin D & lean protein
🏃‍♂️ Maintain a healthy weight to protect your knees & ankles

Small daily habits = stronger joints, fewer complications.

If you or a loved one is living with haemophilia, always consult your haematologist before starting supplements.

Did you know? 🦴

Repeated joint bleeding in haemophilia can silently damage joints over time. Each bleed triggers inflammation that wears down cartilage and bone—leading to chronic pain, stiffness, and reduced movement if not managed early. Early treatment and safe physical activity can help protect joints and preserve mobility.

Bleeds to a patient with a bleeding disorder should always be taken seriously.

While minor cuts and external bleeding can be treated at home if prolong bleeding doesn't persist, internal bleedings and major bleeds are a cause for concern.

During an emergency bleed or a major bleed, it is of utmost importance that you present yourself or your loved one to the nearest ED (Emergency Department). Quick treatment can save lives and minimise damage to overall health.

Medical facilities are encouraged to prioritise patients with bleeding disorders. ❤️‍🩹
