FIJI PUNISHES REFORM — NASILASILA & I ARE LIVING PROOF AND MANY OTHERS

The FRU says Amenoni Nasilasila was banned from the Skipper Cup final because of “registration issues.” But everyone knows that’s just the cover story. The truth is — they were too afraid to let a reformed man rise again. They were afraid of forgiveness.

This country talks big about rehabilitation, second chances, and the Blue Ribbon Prison Program.

Even the whole Prison system and Policy has turned away from Punishment to reform and rehabilitation such that the Prison Act has evolved into Correction Act & Punishment evolved into reform and rehabilitation.

But the moment a man actually reforms and tries to come back, Fiji shuts the door. It preaches mercy — but practices lifelong punishment. That’s the hard truth.

Nasilasila served his sentence. He did his time. He’s not asking for favours — just a fair go. Yet when he steps onto the field, the system says “no.” Why? Because we still believe that once you fall, you’re finished forever. That’s not justice. That’s cruelty wearing a moral mask.

And I know that cruelty personally. I was released in December 2023 — determined to rebuild my life, to contribute, to move forward. But nearly two years later, the government still refuses to restore my law practicing licence. I’ve served my punishment — but I’m still being punished every single day.

So let’s stop pretending we have a real rehabilitation system. If we truly believed in second chances, the reformed would be welcomed back — not locked out.

If the Blue Ribbon Program really meant what it says — to “put the prisoner back where he was before” — then Nasilasila would be playing, and I would be practicing.

Instead, Fiji sends the worst message possible: “You can change all you want, but we will never let you forget.” What hope does that give to any prisoner trying to rebuild? How can we talk about reform when we crush redemption the moment it appears?

Rugby is supposed to unite us. Law is supposed to serve justice. But both have become tools of exclusion when forgiveness is most needed. It’s time to stop hiding behind rules and start standing up for what’s right.

Fiji must decide what kind of nation it wants to be — one that buries its fallen or one that helps them rise again. Because right now, Nasilasila and I are not fighting for fame or position — we are fighting for the soul of what “reform” really means in this country.
