Chairman of the Lautoka Cane Producers Association, Mr. Bal Subramani, was honoured with the first-ever introduced Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Fairtrade Network of Asia Pacific Producers during the Regional Conference 2026 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The prestigious award recognised his outstanding leadership, dedicated service, and long-standing contribution towards strengthening Fairtrade initiatives, empowering producers, and promoting inclusive and sustainable development within farming communities.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Association, Mr. Subramani expressed heartfelt appreciation to the management and staff, Board Members, General Assembly, and farmers for their continuous support, commitment, and collective efforts throughout the years.
He stated that the achievement belongs not only to him, but to every individual who has contributed towards the growth, progress, and success of the Association and the wider Fairtrade movement.
Mr. Subramani encouraged all stakeholders to continue working together with unity and dedication towards building a stronger future for farmers and producer communities.

As we wrap up 2025, we would like to inform our members that the Lautoka Cane Producers Association (LtCPA) will be closed from 22nd December to 2nd January. We will reopen on 5th January, 2026, ready to begin the new year with renewed commitment and energy.

Thus, on behalf of the Chairman, Board Members, staff, and the entire LtCPA team, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May the festive season be filled with peace, happiness, and quality time with family and loved ones.

An awareness training session was conducted for farmers in the Drasa Sector at Shreyas Shopping Center, focusing on strengthening understanding of Best Labour Practices (BLP) and key environmental requirements.

Best Labour Practices (BLP) Covered:
• Reinforcement of obligations regarding the elimination of child labour, particularly during the peak harvesting season.
• Guidance on identifying and preventing forced labour situations.
• Discussions on gender-based violence, gender equality, and the need to eliminate all forms of discrimination

Environmental Requirements Discussed:
• Review of the Glyphosate ban and awareness of its harmful effects.
• The importance of using appropriate PPE during chemical handling and farm operations.
• Proper procedures for disposing of weedicide containers and chemical remnants.
• Safe fertilizer storage and responsible application techniques.
• Farmers’ role in mitigating climate change, preserving biodiversity, and maintaining effective buffer zones near homes and farms.

Yesterday, the LtCPA team met with farmers of the Qeleloa Sector at Dratabu Koro for an important awareness session. Thus, the training provided farmers with practical reminders and updates to support safer and more responsible farm operations.

Labour Practices Covered
• Protecting children by preventing child labour during the busy harvesting season
• Understanding and avoiding forced labour situations

BLP & Environment Awareness Trainings

Over the past weeks, the LtCPA team has successfully carried out a series of awareness trainings across sectors in Nadi District. These sessions aimed to strengthen understanding of Best Labour Practices and key Environmental Requirements that guide safe and sustainable cane farming.

👥 Best Labour Practices (BLP)
• Eliminating child labour during the harvesting period
• Preventing forced labour
• Addressing gender-based violence and promoting equality
• Encouraging non-discrimination in all farm operations

🌿 Environmental Responsibilities
• Awareness on the ban of Glyphosate
• Importance of PPE for chemical handling
• Proper disposal of weedicide and chemical containers
• Safe fertilizer storage and application
• Buffer zones, biodiversity protection & climate action

A remarkable number of 118 participants attended our BLP and Environment requirement training session that was held at Hindu Maha Sabha School for the Malolo sector where some importance and crucial topics were discussed

The session highlighted key areas of best labor practices:
✅ Child Labor—Strictly prohibited, and no employment under 18 in hazardous work.
✅ Forced Labour – Employment must be voluntary, with fair contracts and respect.
✅ Gender-Based Violence & Discrimination – Equal treatment for all; no abuse, harassment, or discrimination tolerated.

And important Environment Requirements:
🌿 Sustainable farming with manual weeding, biological controls, and restricted chemical use (glyphosate banned).
🧤 Chemical safety with full PPE, safe storage (BULK), labelling, and proper disposal of containers.
🌍 Fertilizer management, soil protection, reforestation, biodiversity protection, buffer zones, climate change adaptation, and endangered species.
📒 MOGA records to be kept accurate and updated.
🤝 Dispute Resolution Committee- the complaint handling body.
