CreativeMornings/Helsinki CreativeMornings is a free, monthly breakfast lecture series for creative communities. Each event is free with free breakfast! Everyone is welcome!

CreativeMornings/Helsinki started in August 2014. It is hosted by Johanna Vanttaja. Each event includes a 20 minute lecture, followed by a 10 minute Q&A. The gathering begins at 8:30am with the topic presentation starting at 9:30am and everyone taking off for work at 9:40-10am. CreativeMornings are free of charge! Started in NYC by Tina Roth Eisenberg, founder of swissmiss, CreativeMornings has chapters around the world including New York, Chicago, London, Zurich, LA, San Francisco, Berlin, and Auckland among others. A birthday spread to remember! 🎂✹
The wonderful bakers at , & mikano-, woke up really early to create the perfect birthday feast for us: a stunning cake, glorious porridge and some seriously tasty treats.

Last Friday marked the 12th anniversary of CreativeMornings Helsinki! So, happy birthday to us and our incredible community!

Our birthday speaker, Nyata Shapovalova, is a visual artist with a classical academic background. She presented an unusual art project to the audience: creating artwork specifically for visually impaired people. Nyata used wool felting as a medium to craft human faces for this special audience to touch and feel. Even though they cannot see, Nyata’s tactile art pieces provided enough information for them to build vivid images in their minds.

Nyata brought her works so our audience could feel them with their own fingers, encouraging people to ”see” the faces through touch rather than with their eyes.

She also shared her personal anxieties through her creative work, noting that wool as a material offers comfort because it can easily be corrected and adjusted. According to Nyata, this process mirrors our monthly theme—Current. One needs to learn to go with the flow, move through instability and mutability, and trust in one’s own power to create something amazing.

Meet our CreativeMornings/Helsinki speaker for September: Nyata Shapovalova

For our theme CURRENT, we’re excited to welcome visual artist Nyata Shapovalova, whose interdisciplinary practice moves across artistic disciplines, materials and techniques.

Nyata has a classical academic background in Ancient Greek and Roman culture, history and languages. Studying culture through a diachronic perspective has shaped her distinctive way of looking at both art and life.
Her artistic practice is influenced by the syncretic worldview of the ancient world — an understanding of culture, history, psychology, philosophy and art as interconnected and inseparable parts of human experience.
Nyata has studied ceramics and painting, but chose wool as her primary artistic material for its versatility and expressive potential.

In recent years, her interdisciplinary practice has increasingly focused on inclusivity, history and emotional intelligence, exploring how art can create connections between people, cultures and different ways of experiencing the world.

We’re looking forward to hearing where Nyata’s creative current takes us. âšĄïž

Meet our CreativeMornings/Helsinki speaker for September: Nyata Shapovalova

Twelve years of CreativeMornings/Helsinki! ❀

For our September morning, we’re celebrating 12 years of bringing creative people together in Helsinki — over breakfast, inspiring talks, unexpected connections and plenty of early-morning coffee.

And what better theme for this moment than CURRENT?
Our September theme was chosen by our Columbia chapter in Missouri and illustrated by Bethanie Irons.
What’s current? The latest ideas. Breaking news. New creative work.
‹An electric current powering something to life. ‹A river constantly moving forward. ‹The push and pull of the tide.
CURRENT invites us to think about where we are now — and where we’re headed.

After 12 years, we’re still curious about what’s moving through our creative community. What new ideas are emerging? What are we ready to let go of? What’s pulling us forward?

Sometimes creativity means grabbing hold of the live wire and seeing what happens. Sometimes it means letting go and going with the flow.

Either way, we’re very happy to still be CURRENT.

Our autumn edition was opened with a talk by Nitin Sawhney, who educated our audience about the ecological and socioeconomic significance of palm trees. As our global theme of August is Nakhlah (which means ”palm”), Nitin was a natural choice for the event. Having grown up among palm trees in Bahrain, he has devoted much of his work to exploring the resilience and struggles of ordinary people facing environmental challenges and political conflict.

Nitin presented his documentary film Flying Paper, which follows children and their families in Gaza as they attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest amount of paper kites flown simultaneously in a single location in 2011.

Drawing on his extensive experience in leading transdisciplinary projects and research, Nitin emphasized the importance of engaging with people from diverse backgrounds and fields. He encouraged the audience to view all disciplines as valuable tools and stressed that collaboration across different areas of expertise is where hope for the future lies.

Meet our August speaker: Nitin Sawhney

Nitin Sawhney is a docent at University of Helsinki and Uniarts Helsinki whose work brings together arts, technology, film, urbanism and human rights. His international experience spans from Bahrain and New Delhi to Palestine, Guatemala, Nepal, Moscow and New York.
Through participatory media, documentary film and collaborative art, Nitin explores creative resilience, community and inclusive, human-centered AI.

Now based in Helsinki, he continues to explore how everyday encounters can spark curiosity, awareness and meaningful dialogue.

Meet us Friday 28 August at the Arkkitehtuuri- ja designmuseo for breakfast at 8:15 am, followed by the talk and a short Q&A.
