On 27.-28. October ELSA Estonia and ELSA Finland organised FinEst, a traditional study visit between Tallinn and Helsinki 🇫🇮🇪🇪
These year´s topic was Corporate Crime and during the trip students from both countries had a chance to visit several institutions and learn about various aspects of law, compliance, and justice.⚖️
The first day was spent in Tallinn, where students visited KPMG firm and explored the nature of corporate crime, its red flags, typical fraudster profiles, and how internal audit and compliance help prevent such offences. We also discussed risks that lead to corporate crime and forensic solutions used in investigations. Second academic visit was to Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs, where students got to know about crime statistics, its trends, and cooperation between states. The speaker also covered such topics as surrender and extradition, mutual recognition of court decisions, digitalisation of procedures, and the balance between state sovereignty and EU integration. First day was concluded with a delicious dinner at Vapiano restaurante and social programme.🍕💼
On the second day, estonian and finnish students went to Helsinki to visit law firm DLA Piper. During the visit, students watched a film about a hydroelectric dam collapse - a practical workshop, where students had to analyse the case shown in the film and discuss potential crisis management strategies as well as evaluate actions taken to investigate corporate crimes that led to such situation. After that, students visited the Ministry of the Interior, where topics of anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing were discussed, including legislation, reporting obligations, real cases, as well as the structure of the police and investigation system.
It was an insightful and inspiring study visit. Thank you to all the speakers, organisers and participants. See you on the FinEst 2026!✨
