Background
Ethiopia has experienced recurring humanitarian crises, including droughts, floods, conflicts, and displacement of populations. These crises have resulted in significant needs for humanitarian assistance, including food aid, shelter, healthcare, and protection services.
Peer Humanitarian Partners (PHPs) play a critical role in responding to these humanitarian crises. They possess deep-rooted knowledge of local communities, trusted relationships with affected populations, and complementary skills that can significantly enhance the effectiveness and timeliness of humanitarian operations. Despite their crucial role, most of local PHPs lack the necessary capacity, including human resources, technical expertise, and financial management skills, to effectively lead and implement humanitarian programs.
To address these challenges and enhance the role of PHPs in the humanitarian system, it is essential to strengthen knowledge and skill sharing among local PHPs in Ethiopia to empower local PHP and promote local leadership and capacity improvement.
Program Overview
The ToGETHER program aims to promote local leadership, mentor grass-root PHPs, and enhance anticipatory humanitarian responses in Ethiopia. Building upon the successes of its first phase, ToGETHER 2.0 will focus on operational activities that directly benefit affected populations through the Humanitarian Operation and Innovation Facility (HOIFA) funding. Additionally, it will emphasize mentoring grass-root CSOs and strategic aspects such as gender, innovation, and anticipatory humanitarian action.
The program involves eight countries, including Bangladesh, Colombia, DRC, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Somalia. Within Ethiopia, the program engages five local or national humanitarian partners (LHPs) to promote local leadership, mentor grass-root CSOs, strengthen anticipatory humanitarian action, pilot risk-sharing models, and advocate for equitable partnerships.
