GIZ Ethiopia Visits MASAF Space Jigjiga

During their visit to Jigjiga, the GIZ Ethiopia Country Team stopped by MASAF Space Jigjiga, the flagship community innovation hub of MASAF Development Organization (MDO). We had the opportunity to welcome the team, walk them through the space, and share more about what MDO is building for young people in the Somali Region.

We shared more about the MASAF Spaces model and how these community-based spaces connect young people with skills, learning, innovation, and opportunities. The visit also gave the GIZ team a closer look at the activities taking place at the space and the young people we serve.

MASAF Space Jigjiga has been an important starting point for MASAF Development Organization’s work and the development of the MASAF Spaces model. As we expand this approach to Degahbour, our aim is to make skills, learning, innovation, and opportunity more accessible to young people, particularly those in underserved communities.

Thank you to GIZ Ethiopia for making time to visit us while in Jigjiga. We appreciated the conversation, the interest in our work, and the opportunity to connect.

When there is peace, there is possibility. 🕊️

Peace is more than the absence of conflict. It creates the space for people to learn, create, build, lead and imagine a better future.

In Ethiopia’s Somali Region, the journey toward greater peace and civic space has opened new possibilities for communities and young people. Today, we see those possibilities in places like MASAF Spaces — where young people come together to build skills, explore entrepreneurship, express themselves, and connect with opportunities.

At MASAF, we believe that investing in young people is also investing in peaceful, resilient and opportunity-rich communities.

We also want to use this moment to recognize and appreciate the many peacebuilders — individuals, communities, civil society organizations, institutions and others — who continue to dedicate their time, resources and courage to building safer, more peaceful and inclusive communities.

To every peacebuilder investing in peace, especially in the Somali Region: thank you. Your work matters, and continued investment in peace matters.

Yesterday, our Digital Awareness Ambassadors got together to talk about what it actually takes to make online spaces safer and more responsible.

We spent the session sharing real experiences from the platforms we use every day, talking through the challenges young people run into online, and coming up with practical ways to build better digital habits.

Digital awareness isn't just about knowing how to use technology. It’s about understanding both the opportunities and the risks that come with staying connected, and taking responsibility for how we show up online.

Through initiatives like this, MASAF is helping young people gain the confidence and skills they need to navigate the digital world safely.

Safer online spaces start with all of us.
