🚨 URGENT HUMANITARIAN APPEAL – DAWA zone of SOMALI REGION 🚨

Ceelquur Kebele in Qadaadumo District, Dawa zone of Somali Region, is facing a severe water crisis. Families, children, and the elderly are struggling to survive without access to safe water. Women and children are walking long distances every day in desperate search of water.

⚠️ No humanitarian assistance or emergency relief has reached this community so far.

This is an urgent call from Save the Rural Society (SRS) to:
🤝 Humanitarian donors
🌍 Development partners
💙 Ethiopian Somali diaspora communities

👉 Immediate support is needed for emergency water trucking, rehabilitation of water points, and long-term water solutions.

💧 Access to clean water is a basic human right.
⏳ Delay will cost lives and livelihoods.

We urge everyone who can help to act now, share this message, and stand in solidarity with the people of Dawa Region.

Situation Update: Water Shortage and Drought Risk in the Somali Region

The Deputy Bureau Head of the Disaster Risk Management Office, Abdi-Fatah Mohamed Abdi, has confirmed that the Somali Region is experiencing a critical water shortage, with adequate water availability limited to small areas of the Fafan and Siti zones.

He noted that settlements across the Region are highly dispersed, with some locations comprising only five to six households, significantly complicating emergency service delivery and increasing response costs. While the government has initiated preparedness measures for a potential drought, existing capacities remain limited given the scale and geographic spread of the affected population.

In response, Save the Rural Society (SRS)—a national NGO with extensive experience in humanitarian relief and development programming in the Somali Region—is appealing to donors and humanitarian partners for urgent support. Priority needs include emergency water supply interventions (water trucking and rehabilitation of water points), WASH services, and early livelihood protection measures to mitigate further humanitarian deterioration among vulnerable pastoral and agro-pastoral communities.

SRS also calls upon the Somali Region diaspora to actively engage, organize, and advocate internationally to help mobilize resources and raise global awareness of the emerging crisis. Coordinated diaspora action can play a critical role in amplifying advocacy efforts, supporting fundraising initiatives, and engaging international institutions and policymakers to ensure timely and adequate humanitarian response.

Immediate donor and diaspora engagement is essential to scale up life-saving interventions and prevent the situation from escalating into a severe humanitarian emergency.

The Horn of Africa—covering south-eastern Ethiopia, eastern Kenya, and southern Somalia—
has experienced drier-than-usual conditions since the start of the short-rains season. Rainfall
analysis for August to October, based on the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), shows
a significant rainfall deficit across the region. The Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) further
indicates that these deficits have resulted in soil moisture shortages and vegetation stress,
with some areas reaching Alert levels..

March 22 !

Access to clean water is a basic human right, yet millions still struggle to find safe and sustainable sources. At Save the Rural Society (SRS), we are committed to making a difference by rehabilitating and constructing shallow wells and water troughs—ensuring that both communities and their livestock have reliable access to clean water.

Let’s work together to protect this vital resource and build a future where water is truly for all! 💙💦
