The Queen of Sheba was a wealthy and powerful queen who came from Sheba, a distant kingdom known for its riches and trade.
The Bible does not give her personal name, nor does it explicitly identify her exact ethnicity or capital.
When she heard of King Solomon's fame concerning the name of the LORD, she traveled to Jerusalem with a great caravan carrying gold, precious stones, and abundant spices.
Her journey was not merely a royal visit she came “to prove him with hard questions” (1 Kings 10:1, KJV). She wanted to personally examine the wisdom she had heard about Solomon and the kingdom God had given him.
When she arrived, Solomon answered all her questions, and she observed his wisdom, his house, the food of his table, the organization of his servants, the magnificence of his kingdom, and especially “his ascent by which he went up unto the house of the LORD” (1 Kings 10:5).
She was overwhelmed and declared that the reports she had heard were true, yet she had not been told the half of Solomon's greatness.
She then blessed the LORD, saying, “Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel” (1 Kings 10:9).
She gave Solomon 120 talents of gold, spices in very great abundance, and precious stones (1 Kings 10:10).
Solomon likewise gave her whatever she desired and sent her away with royal gifts. Her visit is also recorded in 2 Chronicles 9:1–12.
Centuries later, Jesus Himself referred to her as “the queen of the south”, saying, “she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here” (Matthew 12:42, KJV).
This gives her story its deepest biblical significance, the Queen of Sheba traveled a great distance because she had heard of Solomon's wisdom, but Jesus Christ is greater than Solomon.
Solomon possessed extraordinary God-given wisdom, but Christ is the greater King and the embodiment of divine wisdom.
