The programs we implement and the people we help have to see long-term results. Our work in Ethiopia began in 1992 under the name of Children’s Homes International-Ethiopia. Our goal was to support vulnerable children in Assela—165 km south of Addis Ababa—and the surrounding area. We sought to promote care for children and develop programs to meet the needs of high-risk children. We are a Christia
n international NGO devoted to serving people with “exceptional needs,” regardless of their religious beliefs. We strive to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ by reaching out to those in dire need, serving them with respect, dignity and compassion, and lastly, by helping them discover and reach their God-given potential. In 1993 we brought five orphaned children into a family home in Assela. It was a tremendous success; these children grew up to complete university educations in various fields—including one who is pursuing a Ph.D. Though we started small, we kept growing and the number of children in our care kept increasing. Since the early 1990s we have taken in several hundred children, and we are currently serving over 525 children. In 2008, Children’s Homes International changed its name to Christian Horizons Ethiopia. Christian Horizons Ethiopia is a branch of Christian Horizons Global, based in Canda. CHGlobal supervises the development work in Ethiopia, but also works in other areas of the world, including other parts of Africa, Asia, and South and Central America. The name change in 2008 was about more than just the name though, it mean broadening the range of projects we were invested in. CH-Ethiopia has since worked hard in developing education and economic development programs. Currently, over 20,000 people are direct beneficiaries of our various outreaches, and over 250,000 people are indirect beneficiaries. We are a registered foreign non-governmental organization by the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia’s Ministry of Justice Charities and Societies Agency (certificate number 1054). Our main office is in Assela, Arsi, 165 km south of Addis Ababa.
