Beginning my last week of living in Warsaw (since moving here in 2022). It’s going to be a busy week, no doubt with many reflections…
It was something very special to write my very first research chapter while living here - research that brought me back to an original passion: underground space.
Over 20 years ago I wrote my first Masters thesis on human use of underground space, with a multidisciplinary perspective (with emphasis on environmental psychology) while at KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
Researching the Warsaw metro system allowed me to highlight what I observed as some international best practices in metro governance & amenities & also to synthesize my interest in the urban underground with my research on walkability.
The chapter I wrote was titled: ‘Exploring Warsaw Metro: Subterranean Solutions for Walkability in Cities’. Find here: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-981-96-0547-7_3
Published In Springer Nature Book: Underground Spaces for Climate Resilience and Sustainability

Thank you to Metro Warszawskie for your support in my research! 👏🚇
Back during my time researching the urban underground many years ago, I attended my 1st acuus.org conference in Turin. I’m excited to be active with ACUUS & later this year will be launching a new committee within the network as well as attending ACUUS 2025 - the
19th World Conference of the Associated Research Centers for the Urban Underground Space (ACUUS), taking place in Belgrade, Serbia, from November 4 to 7, 2025. Find out more about the conference here:
