Empowering women to rebuild their lives โจ

Across Ethiopia's Somali Region, many women face social and economic challenges that limit their opportunities to earn a living and support their families. For women who experience divorce, these challenges are often even greater, leaving them to shoulder the responsibility of raising children with limited resources and few economic opportunities.
Through the CONVENIO Project, Pastoralist Concern (PC) is working to change this reality by supporting women to build resilient livelihoods, strengthen their confidence, and become active contributors to their households and communities. By expanding access to livelihood opportunities, skills, and local markets, the project is helping women achieve greater economic independence and resilience.
Mesal, a mother of three from Chereti Woreda in Ethiopia's Somali Region, is one of the women whose life has been transformed through this support.
After her divorce, Mesal was left to care for her children with only 4,000 Ethiopian Birr from her dowry. Having spent most of her life as a homemaker, she had little experience earning an income. Determined to provide for her family, she invested her savings in a small fruit and vegetable business.
The road to self-reliance was not easy. Entering a marketplace largely dominated by men, Mesal faced financial uncertainty, limited business experience, and many days when her earnings were not enough to cover her family's basic needs. Despite these challenges, she remained committed to building a better future for her children.
Today, Mesal's business provides a reliable source of income, enabling her to meet her family's daily needs with greater stability. Equally important, the journey has strengthened her confidence, independence, and belief in her own abilities.
Reflecting on her experience, Mesal says, "I used to think that women were only meant to be housewives. Now I know we are capable of much more."
Her story demonstrates that economic empowerment goes beyond increasing income. It restores dignity, strengthens self-confidence, and enables women to make informed decisions about their lives and the future of their families. Mesal now encourages other women facing similar circumstances to believe in themselves and seize opportunities to improve their livelihoods.
Through the CONVENIO Project, Pastoralist Concern continues to support women by promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities, strengthening local capacities, improving access to skills and markets, and creating an enabling environment where women can thrive.
Founded in 1995, Pastoralist Concern (PC) is a pastoralist-led Ethiopian Civil Society Organization committed to advancing the sustainable development of pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities. Working primarily in the Somali and Oromia Regional States, the organization promotes resilient livelihoods, inclusive development, and community-led solutions while advocating for the rights and meaningful participation of pastoralist communities in Ethiopia's development.
