Pastoralist Concern in collaboration with Jigjiga University organized an awareness campaign on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Cultural Identity at the JJU Main Hall in May 2026. The campaign aimed to promote dialogue on the impact of cultural practices on women’s rights and development while highlighting positive Somali cultural values that support gender equality.

The event focused on two major thematic areas:

Obstacles Related to Cultural Practices and Beliefs on Women’s Progress
Positive Features of Somali Culture Supporting Gender Equality

Participants engaged in discussions emphasizing the importance of community awareness, women’s empowerment, and collective action to address harmful traditional practices while strengthening positive cultural values that contribute to social inclusion and equality.

Through initiatives such as this awareness campaign, Pastoralist Concern continues to strengthen its commitment to advocacy, community engagement, and the promotion of gender equality in the Somali Region.

We are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of our 2026 Annual Board of Directors Meeting, a significant milestone for our organization and the pastoralist communities we serve.

During the meeting, the Board approved the 2025 Annual Report, highlighting achievements in climate resilience, maternal health, and sustainable livelihoods; the 2026 Annual Plan, outlining our priorities for the coming year; and the 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, a bold framework for driving long-term systemic change.

📢 Strengthening Resilience in East Hararge!

We are excited to announce the launch of a new humanitarian response program in the Oromia Regional State, specifically targeting five woredas within the East Hararge Zone.

In partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Pastoralist Concern is stepping up to support communities hit hard by recent climate-induced shocks. Our goal is to move beyond emergency relief toward long-term recovery and food security.

🌾 Our Integrated Support Package Includes:
Direct Cash Assistance: Providing immediate relief to vulnerable households to meet their most pressing needs and stimulate local markets.

Agricultural Seeds: Distributing high-quality, climate-resilient seeds to help farmers get back on their feet and ensure a successful planting season.

Animal Feed: Safeguarding the livelihoods of pastoralists by providing essential feed to protect livestock—the backbone of the community—during times of scarcity.

Capacity Building: Training and empowering Agricultural Extension Workers with modern techniques to better support farmers and pastoralists in the face of a changing climate.

Headline: Solar-powered transformation in Yaxaas-jamal! ☀️💧
We were honored to host Eng. Ahmed Miraad Layli, Head of the SRS Bureau of Water Affairs, for a progress inspection of our latest irrigation project in Godey district.
This isn't just a construction site—it’s a future lifeline. Once complete, this solar-powered system will pump 220 cubic meters of water per hour, serving two vital needs:
🌱 Agriculture: Boosting local food security.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Community: Providing reliable water for households.
We are proud to lead sustainable, climate-smart solutions that empower our pastoralist communities. Change is coming to Yaxaas-jamal!
