On 14 May 2026, The Lutheran World Federation (LWF Ethiopia), in strategic partnership with Maedot Aid, successfully completed the second phase of dignity kit distribution at the Seba Kare (70 Kare) IDP site.

For women living in displacement, access to hygiene and protection materials is not just a logistical necessity; it is a cornerstone of their physical health and psychological well-being. By delivering these kits, we are addressing the critical intersection of Menstrual Health and Hygiene and Protection Mainstreaming.

This large-scale mobilization is made possible through the support of the Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund (EHF/United Nations OCHA).

LWF Ethiopia's collaboration with Maedot Aid continues to demonstrate the vital importance of Localization in humanitarian action. Together, we are ensuring that aid is not only delivered but is community-centered, transparent, and grounded in the principle of Accountability to affected populations.

Dignity is not a luxury; it is a fundamental human right. At the May-weyni IDP site, The Lutheran World Federation (LWF Ethiopia) in strategic partnership with Maedot Aid, has successfully facilitated a comprehensive Dignity Kit distribution reaching vulnerable right-holders.

Supported by the Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund (EHF/United Nations OCHA), this intervention goes beyond simple material aid; it is a critical component of Protection Mainstreaming and Menstrual Health and Hygiene for displaced populations in Tigray.

To ensure a holistic approach to hygiene and personal protection, each right-holder received a multi-sectoral kit designed for long-term utility and health:
· Infection Prevention and Control to ensure rigorous sanitation and skin health.
· Menstrual Hygiene Management
· Hygiene Hardware
Personal Protection

This distribution highlights the power of localization. By working alongside Maedot Aid, LWF Ethiopia ensures that humanitarian assistance is community-led, culturally appropriate, and reaches those at the highest intersection of vulnerability.

LWF Ethiopia remains committed to Accountability to Affected Populations and ensuring that every intervention is a step toward recovery and hope.

PROTECTION IN THE FRONT LINE: Mitigating Life-Threatening Risks in 70 Kare IDP Site

In a landmark intervention under the Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund (EHF/United Nations OCHA) framework, LWF Ethiopia-in partnership with MaedotAid, successfully conducted a high-level technical workshop focused on protection risks, reporting procedures, and the urgent crisis of Human-Wildlife Conflict.

The Seba Kare IDP site in Mekelle is currently at the intersection of a protection risk. Beyond the standard risks associated with displacement, the community faces a threat: predatory hyena attacks.

The workshop educated IDP leaders on two critical mitigation phases:

1.Awareness & Behavior Change: Educating the community on scientific mitigation, safe reporting, and "nudge" techniques to manage food waste that attracts predators.

2.Population Management: Strategic collaboration with the Bureau of Agriculture to safely reduce the harmful wildlife population by 50% to restore ecological and safety balance.

LWF Ethiopia thanks the Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund (EHF) for their continued support in funding these critical, life-saving protection activities.

On April 27, the Suomen Lähetysseura (Felm) – The Lutheran World Federation (LWF Ethiopia) team conducted a field visit to the Gambella Improved Livelihoods and Resilience of South Sudanese Refugees in Jewi Refugee Camp and Host Communities Project.
The visit to Jewi Refugee Camp and Bonga Kebele provided an opportunity to see how livelihood activities are supporting both refugees and host communities. Using the grid electric power installed by the Lutheran World Federation, businesses are being run by the refugees including briquette production, mobile charging services, and selling cold soft drinks to the refugees.
In Bonga, a youth group engaged in fruit and tree seedling production, showcased the outcome. The FELM-LWF team was also able to visit the promotion of fruit production in the host community of Jewi refugee camp, Bonga kebele.
The visit enabled meaningful engagement with communities and reflection on the progress being made toward strengthening resilience and creating economic opportunities.

Last week, The Lutheran World Federation (LWF Ethiopia) Country Representative, Sophie Gebreyes, visited Tomorrow is Better Organization (TiB) in Addis Ababa.

The visit offered a chance to see firsthand the impact of a refugee-led initiative working closely with communities. It’s a strong reminder that lasting change comes from within communities. LWF Ethiopia continues to stand with partners like TiB in advancing inclusive and locally-led solutions.

Addis Ababa, 01 April 2026. Today, LWF Ethiopia staff had the privilege of visiting a remarkable refugee-led organization and valued partner of LWF Ethiopia - Tomorrow is Better (TiB) - to assess the progress of our partnership.

We left deeply encouraged.
It is truly impressive to witness how TiB continues to grow - not only institutionally and financially, but also in its strategic networking and unwavering commitment to the communities it serves. What stood out most was the diversity of its staff and volunteers, and their shared dedication to advancing the rights and dignity of urban refugees, while also extending their reach to migrants, returnees, and host communities across Addis Ababa.

Equally inspiring is the collective advocacy journey. Through collaboration with Refugees and Returnees Service, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, The Lutheran World Federation, Regional Durable Solutions Secretariat (ReDSS), Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) - ኢሰመኮ, and other like-minded partners, we are beginning to see tangible policy shifts that positively impact the lives of refugees.

There is still much work ahead, but the progress made so far is both meaningful and promising.

At LWF Ethiopia, we remain committed to walking alongside refugee-led organizations like TiB - not only as partners, but as allies - in advancing inclusive, dignified and rights-based solutions and strengthening locally-led responses.
