Restoring Hope Through Pediatric Surgery

Little Rafael is a joyful young boy who loves spending time with his siblings and watching other children play football. As the youngest of five, he fills his home with laughter and happiness. But his mother soon noticed something unusual about his health, and after a visit to a local health center, Rafael was advised to undergo further evaluation at a higher-level facility.

The family soon learned that Rafael needed pediatric surgery. Fear, anxiety, and financial worry overwhelmed them—his father worked as a truck driver, and the cost of treatment felt impossible. Weeks later, they received a phone call informing them that Rafael had been referred to BKMCM for care, fully covered by support from BethanyKids. With hope renewed, they brought him to the hospital, where he was warmly received by the medical team.

Thanks to BethanyKids, Rafael received the surgery he urgently needed at no cost. Today, he is recovering well, and his family is filled with gratitude and relief. In Ethiopia, where nearly half the population is under the age of 15, Dr. Muse joined our team to address this critical gap. By serving with an organization that provides surgery to families who otherwise could not afford it, he is ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of a child’s health and future.

Sead’s Journey to Healing
Sead is a playful young boy who loves spending time with his older brother. But behind his joyful smile was a painful condition he had lived with since birth — a right inguinal hernia.
This condition occurs when part of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, causing a visible swelling in the groin. The swelling often becomes more noticeable when a child cries, coughs, or plays. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications, including the hernia becoming trapped, which can be life-threatening.
As time passed, Sead began to suffer from swelling, vomiting, loss of appetite, and constant discomfort. His condition worsened, leaving his family frightened and uncertain about his future.
Sead’s father, who earns a small income selling clothes by the roadside, was forced to stop working to care for his son. With no stable income, the family struggled to survive while searching for medical help.
After days filled with anxiety and uncertainty, hope finally arrived. Sead was referred to BKMCM, where he received the life-changing surgical care he urgently needed.
Today, Sead is on the path to recovery — and his family can finally breathe again.
“I am truly grateful for the opportunity given to us. Thank you to all the dedicated staff who supported us during this difficult time,” said Sead’s father.

Bladder Exstrophy – What Parents Should Know
Bladder Exstrophy is a rare birth condition in which a child’s bladder develops outside the body. This can cause challenges with urination, skin care, and sometimes the development of pelvic bones. Parents may notice a visible bladder or tissue outside the lower abdomen, urine leakage, or skin irritation around the exposed area.
The good news is that Bladder Exstrophy can be cured with proper surgical treatment. Children who receive timely surgery often achieve normal bladder function and enjoy a healthier, more comfortable life. Early intervention is key to improving long-term outcomes and overall well-being.

‎ኢንጎይናን ኸርኒያ የሚከሰተው የልጅዎ አንጀት በታችኛው የሆድ ክፍል ግድግዳ ላይ ባለ ክፍተት አልፎ ወደ ብሽሽት ወይም ሽንት መሽኛ አካባቢ ሲወጣና እብጠት ሲፈጥር ነው። ይህ ሁኔታ በሕፃናትና በትናንሽ ልጆች ላይ፣ በተለይም በወንዶች ላይ በብዛት ይታያል።
‎
‎ልጁ በሚያለቅስበት፣ በሚያስልበት ወይም በሚያምጥበት ጊዜ እብጠቱ ይበልጥ ጎልቶ ሊታይ ይችላል። ምንም እንኳን ሁልጊዜ ሕመም ባይኖረውም፣ ኢንጎይናን ኸርኒያ በራሱ ስለማይድን ከባድ የጤና ችግሮችን ለመከላከል የቀዶ ጥገና ሕክምና ያስፈልገዋል።

Cryptorchidism (Undescended Testicle) – What Parents Should Know

Some baby boys are born with a condition called Cryptorchidism, also known as an undescended testicle. This occurs when one or both testicles do not move down into the sc***um before birth.
Parents may notice signs such as the absence of one or both testicles in the sc***um, or that the sc***um appears empty or smaller on one side. In some cases, the condition may only be discovered during a medical check-up when a doctor cannot feel the testicle in the sc***um. If parents notice any of these signs, it is important to visit a doctor or pediatric surgeon for proper evaluation.
This condition is usually treated with a surgical procedure called Orchiopexy, which moves the undescended testicle into the sc***um and secures it in the correct position. Early treatment is important because if cryptorchidism is left untreated, it can lead to complications later in life, including fertility problems, testicular torsion, and other related health risks. The good news is that early diagnosis and timely surgery can successfully treat this condition and help children grow up healthy.

‎በአንዳንድ ሁኔታዎች፣ ችግሩ ሊታወቅ የሚችለው በህክምና ምርመራ ወቅት ዶክተሩ የዘር ፍሬውን በከረጢቱ ውስጥ ማግኘት ሲያቅተው ብቻ ሊሆን ይችላል። ወላጆች ከእነዚህ ምልክቶች መካከል አንዳቸውን ካዩ፣ ተገቢውን ምርመራ ለማድረግ ወደ ሐኪም ቤት መሄድ በጣም አስፈላጊ ነው።
‎
‎ይህ የጤና እክል ብዙውን ጊዜ ኦርኪዮፔክሲ (Orchiopexy) በሚባል በቀዶ ጥገና ሕክምና ይታከማል፤ ይህም ያልወረደውን የዘር ፍሬ ወደ ከረጢቱ በማውረድ በትክክለኛው ቦታ ላይ እንዲቀመጥ ያደርጋል።
