His neurosurgery training in Britain culminated at Atkinson Morleyโ€™s Hospital (London University), where he trained with worldโ€™s first and only CT scanner.
๐‚๐€๐‘๐„๐„๐‘: He pioneered neurosurgery in Eastern Nigeria in 1974 at the University of Nigeria as the third neurosurgery centre in Nigeria after UCH Ibadan and LUTH. He served the University as Head of Neurosurgery, Anatomy, Associate Dean, Dean and Deputy Vice Chancellor / Head of UNEC, respectively, and Emeritus Professor.
His vast working experience in Europe, Asia, America, and Africa prepared him for the subsequent global leadership roles in African and World neurosurgery. He served as President Nigeria Surgical Research Society, Secretary Faculty of Surgery WACS, Treasurer WACS, Foundation President AFNS, and now Honorary President of NANS, AFNS and CAANS.

MHN has provided short-term posting and full training for over 180 postgraduate doctors. To date, forty-six neurosurgeons have graduated from MHN and another six are at various stages of their Residency. MHN has continued to lead the way by installing 1.5T and 0.35T MRI as well as 16-SL 64-SL and 256-SL, C T, as well as Zeiss Pentero 900 Operating Microscope and Neuro-endoscope.
He is continually active in research and is widely published locally and internationally, with over 270 publications to his credit, including the book Geographical Neurosurgery published by the American Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) as its first E-Book.
Beyond the shores of Nigeria, he served the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland as Consultant Neurosurgeon and Director of Surgical Education at the NWAFH Tabuk Saudi Arabia that earned him the Excellent Service Award. About fifty other national and international awards are testimonies to his achievements.
He served as Foundation President of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine.

An interim committee was formed with S C Ohaegbulam (Chair) and T Shokunbi (Secretary). The mandate was to form a neurosurgical association that would replace PAANS in the WFNS. A subsequent Congress of PAANS in 2006 endorsed and enlarged the committee with the mandate to produce a Constitution, date, and venue for the launch of an African Neurosurgery Association.
African Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (AFNS) was formally inaugurated on 21st August 2007 at Nairobi, and Samuel Ohaegbulam was installed as Foundation President, Adel El Hakim as Vice President, Mahmoud Qureshi as Secretary, Tayo Shokunbi as Treasurer, and the AFNS was admitted as member of the WFNS. At a meeting held in Nairobi 28 January 2012, with Prof Majid Sami as WFNS Ambassador, it was agreed to form CAANS, and Honorary Presidents were elected followed by the launch on 3rd October 2012 at Cape Town.

When the recent crises threatened WFNS, he was appointed Member Ethics and Legal Committee (2022 -2024) to assist in restoring peace. He also served as Member of the Nominating Committee (1993 โ€“ 1997), and he is one of the longest serving EC Members.
He was Co-Chairman of Special Committee set up by past President Olusegun Obasanjo on Healthcare problems in Nigeria that produced the book: Towards a New Dawn for the Health Sector in Nigeria Post 2015, which was presented to then President of Nigeria as roadmap.
He is married to Marcelle, and they are blessed with three sons, and one is a neurosurgeon.

Please join in celebrating a monumental milestone in Ethiopiaโ€™s Neurosurgeryโ€” the graduation of Dr. Abrham Tadelle and Dr. Biniam G/Egziabher, the first spine surgeons trained in Ethiopia!

After years of intense training, dedication, and unwavering passion, these two pioneers have successfully completed the countryโ€™s first formal spine surgery fellowship โ€” a dream come true not only for them but for all of us who believe in building local capacity, advancing specialized care, and making world-class treatment accessible right here at home.

This achievement is more than a personal or institutional victory. Itโ€™s a win for Ethiopian neurosurgery, a leap forward for patients in need of complex spinal interventions, and a clear sign that homegrown excellence is possible.

Dear Dr. Abrham and Dr. Biniam โ€” your hard work, resilience, and vision have paved the way for future generations. You didnโ€™t just make history; you built a legacy.
Congratulations, pioneers! Ethiopia is proud.

โ— Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a Public Health Problem in Africa
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸฝTBI data in Africa is relatively scarce, highlighting the need for a structured neurotrauma registry.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸฝA Survey conducted across 44 countries in Africa (81.5%) revealed:
o Uneven distribution of neurosurgical centers, with 47.3% reporting 3โ€“5 centers per country.
o 75.8% of centers serve both public and private systems ; 22% are exclusively public.
o 79.1% rely on paper-based registries, while 46.2% use electronic systems (mainly Excel).
o Seven countries have national registries with varying patient volumes.

๐Ÿ“Key challenges include administrative burdens, staffing and material shortages, time constraints, and low awareness.
๐Ÿ“Financial support from governments and NGOs is crucial for expanding registries, improving data collection, and enhancing neurotrauma care across Africa.
