🌾 Uniting for a Stronger Future: Preventing Spina Bifida through Food Fortification 🌾

The Alliance for Birth Defects hosted a conference connecting white flour mill manufacturers, hospitals, neurosurgeons, and SBH coordinators to strengthen Ethiopia’s efforts in large-scale food fortification.

With the participation of the Ministry of Health, EFDA, Ministry of Industry, and partners, the meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration to ensure all regions engage in fortifying flour and preventing Spina Bifida.

Together, we’re taking bold steps toward a healthier generation.

🌍 This week, the Alliance for Birth Defects (ABD) proudly marked World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day by hosting the National SBH Conference on Prevention in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, GAIN, ReachAnother Foundation and Bahir Dar University.

The event focused on preventing Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus through Large-Scale Food Fortification and folic acid promotion, bringing together experts, policymakers, and youth advocates to strengthen national prevention and inclusion efforts.

Together, we are building a future where every child is born free from preventable birth defects and every person with SBH has the opportunity to thrive.

We’re proud to celebrate a growing collaboration that’s making waves in prevention between ReachAnother Foundation, the Alliance For Birth Defect, and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.

Together, we are raising the bar for large-scale food fortification in Ethiopia, a powerful, cost-effective way to prevent neural tube defects before they happen.

This partnership has already:
✅ Funded community dialogues with families and wheat flour millers
✅ Launched a public podcast reaching health professionals nationwide
✅ Led critical conversations at Ethiopia’s national neurosurgery conference
✅ Elevated the voice of parents in shaping health policy and awareness

Food fortification is about advocacy, collaboration, mothers asking better for their children, neurosurgeons standing up for prevention, and millers stepping in as allies. The momentum is building!

🌍 Advocating for Prevention Through Nutrition

We are proud to organize and host the awareness creation program for parents and Spina bifida affected community on Large-Scale Food Fortification Advocacy, in collaboration with Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)

This important forum brought together families affected by Spina Bifida, health professionals, policy makers and partners to amplify the call for mandatory folic acid food fortification—a proven strategy to prevent birth defects and improve public health.

Excited to share that Alliance For Birth Defect is collaborating with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) to advocate for and support Large-Scale Food Fortification (LSFF) as a proven strategy to prevent devastating birth defects such as Neural Tube Defects (NTDs).

Through this partnership, we aim to bring global evidence and momentum to national efforts—ensuring that every child has the healthiest possible start to life.

Having been part of various global initiatives—from improving surgical care in low-resource settings to strengthening child health systems—this collaboration holds deep meaning for me. It's another important step toward addressing preventable conditions through smart, scalable, and sustainable solutions.

Let’s keep pushing forward—because no child should suffer from a condition we know how to prevent.
