Strengthening Palliative Care Capacity in Hawassa

Last week, Hospice Ethiopia conducted a four-day palliative care training for 24 healthcare professionals at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. The training brought together a multidisciplinary group of participants, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and social workers.

Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital is one of the four hospitals in Ethiopia that provide radiotherapy services. Integrating palliative care into cancer care is therefore essential, as it is a key component of comprehensive cancer care.

As part of our commitment to improving access to palliative care, Hospice Ethiopia continues to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to deliver effective, palliative care services.

Together, we are working toward ensuring that patients with serious illnesses receive compassionate, holistic palliative care when they need it most. 💙

We were delighted to welcome our valued partners, Sue and Jamie from Hospice UK

They spent a productive week with our team, strengthening our collaboration and witnessing firsthand the impact of hospice and palliative care services in Ethiopia. During their visit, they also visited hospitals to observe the progress of palliative care development and ongoing efforts to expand access to compassionate care.

Sue and Jamie brought a generous donation of colostomy bags collected from Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. They personally collected and transported these essential supplies all the way from the UK to Ethiopia.

Colostomy bags are critically needed by many of our patients. However, they have limited availability, poor accessibility, and are often unaffordable for those we serve. This donation will greatly improve comfort, dignity, and quality of life for patients who depend on these supplies.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sue and Jamie for their dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of patients in need.

🕯️ Honoring Lives, Supporting Families — Hospice Ethiopia Memorial Day

Hospice Ethiopia held a Memorial Day to honor the patients who passed away after their courageous journey with cancer& other life limiting illnesses and to recognize the families who stood beside them, families who faced unimaginable challenges while caring for their loved ones.

At Hospice Ethiopia, we deeply value one of the core principles of palliative care: being patient-centered and family-focused. This year, as part of strengthening our holistic support, we introduced Memorial Day as a way to honor both patients and the families who shared their journey.

As we approached the end of the year, this special gathering was organized with three intentions:
✨ To honor and remember the patients we have lost
✨ To acknowledge and support bereaved families in their grief
✨ To create a space for families to share, reflect, and find comfort in one another

The program featured heartfelt messages from our founder Sister Tsigereda, board member Dr. Yoseph, spiritual leaders from the Orthodox, Protestant, and Muslim religion, patient families and caregivers, as well as the Clinical Department Head Sister Kalkidan and Senior Palliative Care Nurse Sister Flagot. All Hospice Ethiopia staff were also present, creating a warm and compassionate atmosphere of remembrance.

Strengthening Palliative Care in Ethiopia

Hospice Ethiopia recently conducted a five-day palliative care training for healthcare professionals from Alert Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and Yekatit 12 Hospital.

These two hospitals have newly established their palliative care services, marking an important step in expanding access to quality care for patients with life-limiting illnesses.

As part of our commitment to supporting the national palliative care initiative, Hospice Ethiopia is equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to deliver effective, patient-centred palliative care.

Together, we are building a more compassionate and responsive health system for those who need it most. 💙

At Hospice Ethiopia, we take a holistic approach to palliative care, addressing not only medical needs but also emotional and practical support.
Through our food support initiative, we ensure that patients facing life-threatening illnesses have access to nutritious food that supports their comfort and strength.

Along with the pictures shared here, you’ll also find a short video message from our Clinical Department Head, Nurse Kalkidan, who highlights the importance of this support for our patients and the difference it makes in their daily lives. 🎥

Together, we can make sure no one faces illness alone or hungry.

🙏🏽 We extend heartfelt thanks to our partners and supporters who make this initiative possible.

This week (3-7 November) is Trustees Week, a celebration of the hard work trustees do. So here's to trustees up and down the land, ESPECIALLY (of course) our wondrous HE trustees, who work tirelessly to raise funds for the great work the team does in Addis. The pic shows our recent trustees' trip to Ethiopia: Sue, Jamie and Jill are in the centre, with Tim second left. They're with some of the hardworking HE staff, in the middle of Addis, having spent the day on the road meeting patients. Congratulations to trustees, wherever you are, whoever you work for, keep it up!
