Timely intervention alleviates adverese effects of drought

Fatuma Ali, 34, is eight month pregnant living with her nine children in her small tent located in Hisala village. She is one of the people affected by the drought who are in dire need of assistance. She become one of the people who benefited from a consortium project with Oxfam GB and Save the Children, funded by the European Union Civil Project and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO-HIP).

Fatuma’s Story

“I moved here with my nine children, after I got the information that Islamic Relief is providing water, nutrition and cash support to families like me. I traveled a long distance to come here. We rely on water for ourselves and our animals, getting water for drinking and cooking has become a dream that is hard to come true. Because of the persistent drought we lost our livelihood and were helpless to do anything. We ended up with empty hands, my husband left home looking for daily work but his income couldn’t support our family. I am suffering with my nine children.”

“Now Islamic Relief is providing us with various things, for example, we got education on hygiene and sanitation, before this I was not aware about water borne diseases like diarrhea. I used to think any water can do well. We were provided with soap and water treatment chemicals. I used to take my children to health centers now and then because they were vulnerable to sickness. Now I don’t need to do it as we drink clean water.”
