Strengthening Partnerships for Women’s Political Rights

On June 22, 2026, EWLA had the honor of welcoming the National Democratic Institute (NDI) delegation led by Dr. Franklin Oduro (Country representative), along with Leulseged Girma, (Program Manager) and Her Excellency Gemima Neves Barlaw (South East Africa Regional Team Head)

The Executive Directress of EWLA, Mrs. Hebret Abahoy and her team shared insights on the opportunities, challenges, and lessons learned from observing the 6th and 7th Ethiopian National Elections. The discussion also focused on EWLA’s post-election priorities to advance women’s political participation and safeguard against violence in elections.

NDI reaffirmed its commitment to provide technical support to EWLA’s mission. Meanwhile, the delegation toured EWLA’s office, including the hotline service, which continues to serve as a vital resource for women across Ethiopia.

Together, we move forward with renewed energy to ensure elections remain free from VAW-E and inclusive for all.

From Fragmented to Cohesive: Strengthening Survivor-Centered Care. (June 22, 2026, Addis Ababa)

Ethiopian Women Lawyers' Association (EWLA), in partnership with Health Ethiopia, hosted a pivotal inter-sectoral workshop. This gathering brought together law enforcement, educators, and One-Stop Center representatives to bridge institutional gaps in SRHR and GBV response.

The session was aimed to Create a sense of accountability and informed decision making among Duty Bearers and Stakeholders for SRHR & GBV and to foster a survivor-centered system built on accountability and evidence-based decision-making.

The session is helpful for Law Enforcement organs to sharpen their skills in trauma-informed interviewing and judicial evidence handling. Likewise, One-Stop Centers can improve their legal literacy for better documentation without compromising confidentiality. In the mean time, all Stakeholders will be equipped with established, new, seamless cross-agency referral network.

EWLA is moving away from isolated workflows to a unified, cohesive system that prioritizes the survivor’s needs at every step.

Together, we are building a stronger, more accountable response for our community.

We proudly participated in the official launch of the Renewed Women’s Voice Leadership Ethiopia (RWVL-E), a six year flagship initiative (2025-2031), held on June 17, 2026 at Haile Grand Hotel, Addis Ababa.

The program, supported by the Government of Canada and implemented in partnership with CARE Ethiopia and six principal local CSOs, aims to advance women’s leadership and gender equality nationwide.

The launching event featured remarks from His Excellency. Nicolas Simard, Ambassador of Canada to Ethiopia, Mr. Mahteme Mikre, CARE Ethiopia Country Director and representatives from the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, and principal partners.

The Ethiopian Women Lawyers’ Association (EWLA) highlighted its role in leading the Rapid Response Fund (RRR), a flexible funding mechanism designed to provide immediate support to women’s rights defenders, structurally excluded groups and women’s rights organization facing urgent challenges/risk and opportunities.

The ceremony concluded with a collective pledge to strengthen women’s voices and leadership for lasting social change. EWLA also showcased its initiatives in an exhibition, fostering collaboration and partnership with fellow advocacy groups.

We look forward to driving impact together as we champion women’s leadership across Ethiopia.
