Piloting the Future of Sponsorship Data Collection in Ethiopia

Plan International is implementing a two-year Sponsorship Digital Data Collection (SDDC) project aimed at transforming how sponsorship data is collected across 44 country offices worldwide.
Designed to replace fragmented paper-based systems, the initiative introduces a scalable digital platform tailored for multilingual, low connectivity, and diverse literacy settings.

From 4–12 May 2026, the CommCare application was successfully piloted in Ethiopia through a Training of Trainers (ToT), CommCare HQ training, and end user training sessions.

The pilot was met with strong enthusiasm from both staff and community users, reflecting how highly anticipated this initiative has been. Participants noted that the application is very user friendly and represents a significant step toward more seamless data collection, reporting, and interpretation.

Celebrating a Proud Milestone!

We are excited to share that Plan International Ethiopia’s Amhara Program Area has been recognised as one of the top-performing organisations at the Amhara Region’s GO–CSO Partnership Forum Week held in Bahir Dar.

Out of 170 civil society organisations, we ranked 2nd and received a Special Trophy Award and Certificate of Recognition from the Amhara National Regional State Bureau of Finance.

This achievement reflects our continued impact in Education, Child Protection, Health & WASH, Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH), Livelihoods & Economic Empowerment, and Humanitarian Response.

A standout moment was the AI-powered digital education demonstration by students from Lalibela, showcasing innovation and the future of learning for girls and young people.

This recognition strengthens our commitment to delivering inclusive, sustainable development and empowering communities across Ethiopia.

Safeguarding Week 2026 at Plan International Ethiopia was launched with a strong demonstration of leadership commitment, opening with an all-staff meeting led by the Deputy Country Director. Under the theme “Sustainable Safeguarding,” the Country Director and Deputy Country Director reaffirmed that safeguarding is not a one-time agenda, but a continuous, non‑negotiable responsibility embedded in every role and decision across the organization. Staff were reminded that safeguarding is a collective duty, one that requires daily practice, accountability, and proactive action to foster a culture of safety, respect, and trust.

Throughout the week, staff took part in creative and participatory activities that encouraged reflection, ownership, and accountability. Highlights included the screening of the “It Starts With Me” video, featuring personal reflections on protection and responsibility, and the symbolic Safeguarding Commitment Tree, where staff placed their fingerprints as visible pledges to uphold safeguarding values. These activities reinforced unity, personal responsibility, and shared organizational accountability. Safeguarding Week 2026 successfully strengthened awareness, deepened engagement, and celebrated the shared commitment that safeguarding starts with each individual and must be sustained together.

Strengthening quality, coordination, and impact in humanitarian response

With support from (ECHO), Plan International Ethiopia, in close collaboration with Plan International NL Child Protection in Emergency (CPiE) and Education in Emergencies (EiE) technical advisors, successfully delivered a four-day capacity-building training for 25 field team members from PIE and consortium partners.

The training combined both theory and hands-on practice, focusing on EiE, CPiE, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Participants explored key indicators, monitoring frameworks, and practical tools to strengthen program implementation, reporting, and accountability.

Beyond technical learning, the sessions helped build a shared understanding of the project’s goals, approaches, and expected outcomes, ensuring more timely, coordinated, and high-quality delivery across all partners. The training also fostered cross-learning and alignment on monitoring, reporting, and accountability mechanisms.

In closing, Deputy Country Director Mr. Hiwotie underscored the critical role of ECHO’s life-saving funding within the broader humanitarian landscape. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards, strong coordination, and a results-driven approach to deliver meaningful and lasting impact for communities in need.

Transforming Commitments into Action: High-Level Advocacy Event in Afar Reinforces Commitment to Women and Girls

Plan International Ethiopia, in partnership with the Afar Regional Women and Social Affairs Bureau, convened a high-level advocacy event in Semera to mark the International Women’s Day celebrations, bringing together senior federal and regional government leaders, development partners, academia, faith leaders, women’s associations, and civil society representatives to strengthen collective action for the rights, protection, and empowerment of women and girls in the Afar Region.

The event was graced by high-level federal and regional government officials and institutional leaders, reflecting strong national and regional commitment to advancing gender equality and eliminating harmful practices affecting women and girls. The presence of senior decision-makers and community leaders underscored the importance of sustained leadership and coordinated action to address deeply rooted challenges facing women and girls in the region.

Through keynote remarks, technical presentations, panel discussions, and recognition sessions, the forum elevated public dialogue on the urgent need to end child marriage and female ge***al mutilation, while reinforcing accountability among enforcement bodies, service providers, and community structures. Discussions emphasized the need for stronger coordination, consistent law enforcement, and expanded access to survivor-centered protection, rehabilitation, and social support services.

Our vibrant Youth Advisory Panel staged a Theatre for a change, a YALA project activity on legislative theatre on FGM that actively engaged distinguished guests and transformed them into committed change-makers through immersive participation.

During the event, Plan International Ethiopia reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with government institutions and regional authorities in advancing the wellbeing of girls and young women. The organization highlighted its ongoing efforts in Afar and across Ethiopia to prevent harmful practices, promote sexual and reproductive health, expand access to quality education, and improve WASH services in underserved communities. These efforts were recognized by participants as critical contributions toward sustainable and community-driven change.

The advocacy platform concluded with a renewed call for strengthened collaboration among government, communities, and development partners to translate commitments into concrete results and ensure that policies and laws are fully implemented at community level.

The event reaffirmed a shared vision for Afar Region where every girl is protected from violence, free from harmful practices, and empowered to learn, lead, and thrive with dignity.

Water is more than a basic need; it’s a right.

On this , we’re reminded that access to clean and safe water changes everything. It keeps children healthy, helps girls stay in school, and gives communities the chance to thrive.

At Plan International Ethiopia, our WASH programs go beyond building water points, focusing on sustainable solutions suchas solar-powered water systems. We work hand in hand with communities to improve sanitation, promote hygiene, and ensure that girls and young people have a voice in shaping solutions that affect their lives.
