Transforming Commitments into Action: High-Level Advocacy Event in Afar Reinforces Commitment to Women and Girls
Plan International Ethiopia, in partnership with the Afar Regional Women and Social Affairs Bureau, convened a high-level advocacy event in Semera to mark the International Women’s Day celebrations, bringing together senior federal and regional government leaders, development partners, academia, faith leaders, women’s associations, and civil society representatives to strengthen collective action for the rights, protection, and empowerment of women and girls in the Afar Region.
The event was graced by high-level federal and regional government officials and institutional leaders, reflecting strong national and regional commitment to advancing gender equality and eliminating harmful practices affecting women and girls. The presence of senior decision-makers and community leaders underscored the importance of sustained leadership and coordinated action to address deeply rooted challenges facing women and girls in the region.
Through keynote remarks, technical presentations, panel discussions, and recognition sessions, the forum elevated public dialogue on the urgent need to end child marriage and female ge***al mutilation, while reinforcing accountability among enforcement bodies, service providers, and community structures. Discussions emphasized the need for stronger coordination, consistent law enforcement, and expanded access to survivor-centered protection, rehabilitation, and social support services.
Our vibrant Youth Advisory Panel staged a Theatre for a change, a YALA project activity on legislative theatre on FGM that actively engaged distinguished guests and transformed them into committed change-makers through immersive participation.
During the event, Plan International Ethiopia reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with government institutions and regional authorities in advancing the wellbeing of girls and young women. The organization highlighted its ongoing efforts in Afar and across Ethiopia to prevent harmful practices, promote sexual and reproductive health, expand access to quality education, and improve WASH services in underserved communities. These efforts were recognized by participants as critical contributions toward sustainable and community-driven change.
The advocacy platform concluded with a renewed call for strengthened collaboration among government, communities, and development partners to translate commitments into concrete results and ensure that policies and laws are fully implemented at community level.
The event reaffirmed a shared vision for Afar Region where every girl is protected from violence, free from harmful practices, and empowered to learn, lead, and thrive with dignity.
