What does it really take to help young entrepreneurs move from ideas to real businesses?

Our Senior Project Manager, Elsabeth Tsegaye, recently joined the Exchange Series Episode 2:Enabling Pathways for Youth Entrepreneurs as a panelist, contributing to a timely conversation on how to build sustainable, youth led businesses.

The session, organized by Don Bosco Tech Africa and Welthungerhilfe (WHH), brought together practitioners from across Africa to reflect on how young people transition into the world of work and what kind of support truly helps them move forward.

From our experience at Reach for Change Ethiopia, one thing is clear. A good idea is only the starting point. What really matters is what comes after that.

The young entrepreneurs who move forward are often the ones who take early steps to test their ideas in real markets, stay resilient even when resources are limited, and build solutions that respond to real, everyday challenges in their communities.

At the same time, the discussion reminded us that hard work and determination alone are not enough.

There are still major gaps that continue to slow down young entrepreneurs:limited access to finance complex regulatory processes and weak or unclear market linkages

Addressing these challenges is essential if we want to move beyond supporting startups in principle and begin enabling businesses that can grow, sustain themselves, and create jobs.

We are proud to be part of these important conversations and to continue supporting entrepreneurs who are building practical, locally grounded solutions with real potential for impact.

Building for Scale: Inside Our EdTech Immersion Week

As the week moves forward, something is becoming very clear. The conversations are shifting. The questions are sharper. Founders are not just thinking about what they are building, but how far it can go and what it will take to get there.

As part of the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship, implemented by Reach for Change, fellows spent the day going deeper into what scaling really means in practice.

So what came up?

✅ Leadership and team building

There was a strong focus on people. What kind of team do you need as you grow? What kind of leadership holds everything together? Because growth puts pressure on both.

✅ Scaling operations and ex*****on

Founders looked closely at their systems and day to day operations. What works now may not hold tomorrow. Scaling means putting the right structures in place early, before things start to stretch.

✅ One on one scaling framework reviews

Each fellow had the space to step back and look at their own journey. What is working, what is missing, and what needs to change. The conversations were honest and practical.

In the afternoon, the session continued with a warm welcome from Wariko Waita , Director at the Mastercard Foundation Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning, setting the tone for a focused and reflective discussion.

This was followed by a dedicated communications session led by Joy Dorren Birra, Communications Specialist at the Mastercard Foundation. The session focused on donor branding, clear messaging, and how to approach strategic communications with clarity and purpose.

✅One thing stayed with us throughout the day.

Scaling is not just about getting bigger. It is about staying strong while you grow, and keeping your purpose clear as things become more complex.

We are proud to walk alongside these founders as they take this step, building solutions that can reach and support children and youth across Ethiopia.

Stay tuned as the journey continues. We are excited to share reflections and key moments from the final day, where ideas came together, perspectives sharpened, and the path to scale became even clearer.

Day 3 and 4 of Immersion Week: From Ex*****on to Scale

As the week unfolds, the focus is becoming clearer.

It is no longer just about ideas. It is about decisions, direction, and what it truly takes to grow something that works in the real world.

Day 3 was about getting practical.

Through case studies and open conversations, founders explored what it takes to build and grow EdTech solutions that last. The discussions focused on making the right product decisions, staying close to user needs, and thinking carefully about sustainability.

One message stood out. A strong idea is not enough. Growth comes from consistent, thoughtful decisions over time. The “Dream Killers” session brought a different level of honesty into the room. Founders reflected on what holds them back, from real challenges to self-doubt, and what it takes to move forward with clarity and confidence.

The day also reinforced a key principle around design.

Putting students, teachers, and learning outcomes at the center is not just a concept. It is a daily decision. Because in EdTech, if it does not work for the learner, it does not work.

Day 4 pushed the conversation further.

The focus shifted to scale, how to take solutions to market and grow them in a way that is both practical and sustainable.

Founders explored different pathways, B2B, B2C, and B2G, and what it really means to enter and grow in each space.

Partnerships became a central theme. Working with government, institutions, and the private sector is not always simple, but it is often what unlocks real reach and long term impact.

The conversations were open and grounded in reality, what works, what does not, and what needs to be navigated carefully.

The day then moved into action.

Through prototyping and iteration, founders tested ideas, refined their approach, and worked with real feedback to improve what they are building.

Because the strongest solutions are not built once. They evolve, again and again.

Across these two days, one thing is clear.

Founders are not just learning. They are rethinking, refining, and reshaping how their solutions can work in the real world.

This is where clarity grows, and where the path to scale begins to take shape.

More reflections will follow as the week continues.

From Learning to Scale: Inside Immersion Week, Cohort III

Cohort III of the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship has come together for an important week of reflection, learning, and growth.

At Kuriftu, founders, managers, and teams from 12 EdTech enterprises are stepping away from the day to day to think deeply about how their solutions can truly work within real education systems.

This week is not about presentations. It is about asking the right questions, challenging assumptions, and building clarity on what it takes to grow meaningful solutions.

Delivered by Reach for Change, with the support of the Mastercard Foundation, and in collaboration with Mirepa Capital and Carnegie Mellon University, the sessions bring together practical learning, honest conversations, and shared experiences.

Day 1 focused on learning science, helping founders understand how people learn and how those insights can shape stronger, more effective solutions.

Day 2 moved into product development and user-centered design, pushing participants to rethink their approach, better understand their users, and refine how their solutions respond to real needs.

What stands out so far is the openness in the room. Founders are sharing challenges, learning from each other, and taking a closer look at what needs to change.

We are grateful to the facilitators and partners who are creating this space for meaningful exchange and reflection.

This is where ideas become clearer, and the path forward begins to take shape.

More reflections and voices from the fellows will be shared in the coming days.

Stay with us as the journey continues.
