Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology

Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology EGST was jointly founded in 1997 by the EECMY, the EKHC and ECFE. EGST opened its door to the first students in January of 1998. EGST have had four Directors.

EGST was jointly founded in 1997 by the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY), the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (EKHC) and the Evangelical Churches Fellowship of Ethiopia (ECFE). The founding vision was born from the growing need, perceived within the Ethiopian Evangelical churches, for contextually relevant and affordable graduate-level theological education in Ethiopia. EGST operated

initially from a single room at the EKHC head office and then moved to a spacious bungalow. In 2002 EGST was able to buy a site in a prime location in Addis Ababa. Classes and offices were located in a house on this property. In August 2009 a purpose-built 6-story building on this property became the new home for EGST, with EGST occupying the upper three floors. In that same year, EGST was accredited by the Accrediting Council for Theological Education in Africa (ACTEA). In March of 2014, a purpose-built 7-story building located on the same property was dedicated and is now the new home of EGST. Twelve students, including one female, were enrolled at EGST when the school began. Since then enrollment has grown steadily. In 2008-2009 there were 96 students enrolled. For the academic year of 2013-2014, about 200 students were enrolled. The first class graduated in 2001. During the past 25 years, EGST has graduated more than 699 students who are currently serving the Church and Society in Ethiopia and beyond in various ways. Over the last 25 years, EGST Faculty has expanded with full-time faculty, along with regular part-time faculty and visiting faculty who currently provide lecture at the school. From humble beginnings, EGST looks back on all that God has done since 1997. We praise God for what he continues to do through the lives and ministries of our graduates as they serve the Church and society in Ethiopia and beyond. The year 2022 is Silver Jubilee for EGST, and we are celebrating the faithfulness of God throughout the year in various events.

🎓 Congratulations to the EGST Class of 2026!

The Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology (EGST) proudly celebrated the graduation of 84 students during its 2026 Commencement Ceremony. Graduates received their qualifications in Post Graduate Diploma in Biblical and Theological Studies (PGD-BTS), Master of Arts in Development Studies (MADevS), Master of Arts in Peace and Sustainable Development Studies) (MA-PSD), Master of Arts in Leadership and Management (MALM), Master of Arts in Biblical and Theological Studies (MABTS), and recognise a PhD graduate from VU-EGST cohort.
We congratulate all graduates and pray that God will use them to faithfully serve the Church and society in Ethiopia and beyond.

A Tribute of Remembrance and Condolences

With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we express our heartfelt condolences on the passing of our beloved Ato Ayele Welde. Having served the institution and the Kingdom of God diligently from March 2016 to June 2025, the community of the Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology (EGST) expresses its profound Christian sorrow on his transition to his eternal home.

Ato Ayele was a cherished colleague, a devoted worker, and a warm presence whose dedication left an indelible mark. Throughout his years of service at EGST, he was known for his diligence, kindness, and humility, working in harmony and Christian cooperation with the leadership, faculty, students, and fellow staff members.

The leadership, faculty, and entire staff of the Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology (EGST) express their deepest grief at the passing of Ato Ayele Welde. We pray that the comfort of the Almighty, which surpasses all human understanding, will hold his family, close friends, and colleagues close during this difficult time.

በተሰማን ጥልቅ ሐዘንና በከበደ ልብ፤ በየኢትዮጵያ የስነመለኮት ድህረ ምረቃ ትምህርት ቤት ከመጋቢት ወር 2008 ዓ.ም እስከ ሰኔ ወር 2017 ዓ.ም ድረስ ተቋሙንና የእግዚአብሔርን መንግሥት በትጋት ያገለገሉት ውዱ ወንድማችን አቶ አየለ ወልዴ ከዚህ ዓለም ድካም አርፈው ወደ ዘላለማዊው ቤት በክብር መሻገራቸውን የትምህርት ቤቱ ማኅበረሰብ በታላቅ ክርስቲያናዊ ሐዘን ይገልጻል።

አቶ አየለ በትምህርት ቤቱ ውስጥ ባገለገሉባቸው የሥራ ዓመታት ሁሉ በታታሪነታቸውና በቅንነታቸው የሚታወቁ የነበሩ ሲሆን፤ ከተቋሙ አመራሮች፣ መምህራን፣ ተማሪዎችና ከሥራ ባልደረቦቻቸው ጋር በፍቅርና በክርስቲያናዊ ትሕትና ተግባብተው የሚሠሩ እጅግ ተወዳጅና መልካም ባልደረባ ነበሩ።

የኢትዮጵያ የስነመለኮት ድህረ ምረቃ ትምህርት ቤት አመራሮች፣ መምህራንና መላው ሠራተኞች በአቶ አየለ ወልዴ ዕረፍት የተሰማቸውን ጥልቅ ሐዘን እየገለጹ፤ ለውድ ቤተሰቦቻቸው፣ ለቅርብ ጓደኞቻቸውና ለሥራ ባልደረቦቻቸው ሁሉ ከሰው አእምሮ በላይ የሆነውን የእግዚአብሔርን ፍጹም መጽናናትና ሰላም ከልብ ይመኛሉ።

EGST Hosts Peace and Reconciliation Seminar
On 26 June 2026, the Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology (EGST), through its Training and Capacity Building Programme (TCBP), successfully hosted a Peace and Reconciliation Seminar on the theme, "Healing Relationships, Restoring Communities: The Role of Christian Faith Communities in Addressing Division in Ethiopia." The seminar brought together 100 participants from churches, theological institutions, academia, civil society organizations engaged in peacebuilding, and partner organizations to reflect on the role of faith communities in fostering peace and reconciliation.
Through keynote presentations, panel discussions, and interactive group discussions, participants explored the root causes of broken relationships, including declining social trust, trauma, and community division. The seminar highlighted the unique role of churches and faith leaders in rebuilding trust, promoting healing, and serving as catalysts for reconciliation.
The seminar concluded with practical recommendations, including strengthening collaboration among churches, theological institutions, and peacebuilding stakeholders; expanding peacebuilding training; and encouraging faith communities to actively engage in dialogue, mediation, and community restoration initiatives.
As part of its ongoing commitment to holistic theological education and societal transformation, EGST will continue creating platforms that equip leaders to promote healing, reconciliation, and sustainable peace in Ethiopia.
