Empowering Health Sovereignty: National Advocacy Workshop Marks Global Self-Care Month in Ethiopia
On July 21, 2026, the Dire International Hotel in Adama became the epicenter of a pivotal conversation regarding the future of self-care in Ethiopia. As part of a nationwide commemoration of International Self-Care Month, the Ministry of Health (MOH), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) , ESOG and other key strategic partners, hosted a high-level advocacy workshop under the powerful theme: "Self-Care puts your health in your hands: Test, Track, and Thrive."
To tackle a significant change in Ethiopian healthcare, a move towards a decentralized, patient-focused strategy for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCAYH-N) was discussed at a workshop attended by a notable group of healthcare experts, lawmakers, scholars, and on-the-ground workers.
A delegate from the Kolfe Health Center in Addis Ababa then presented a specific case study, illustrating how the implementation was carried out at the facility. This display exemplified the broader national initiative, highlighting how patients' trust significantly increases as they become acquainted with the resources needed to independently manage their personal health issues.
A core highlight of the workshop was the panel discussion moderated by Dr. Haimanot Ambelu. The panel comprised representatives from the Ministry of Health, , the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA), PSI and the Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG).
The workshop purposefully centered the human experience with a testimonial from a client at the Adama Health Center. Hearing from a woman who had used self-care tools to manage her reproductive health provided the gathered professionals with a sobering and empowering reminder of why the policy work matters.
The workshop ended with a revitalized feeling of determination. While Ethiopia faces challenges in its healthcare system, the main idea of the day was evident: the upcoming health landscape in Ethiopia will be driven by self-empowerment, data, and will be controlled by the public.

Enhancing Obstetric Care Through Ultrasound Training
In a notable effort to enhance maternal healthcare in Southern Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG), in collaboration with WEEMA International, has successfully completed an extensive Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound Training program.
The ten-day workshop, held from June 23 to July 3, 2026, at the Hawassa University Health Science College Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Center, marked a critical step in decentralizing high-quality diagnostic care.
Led by a team of seasoned obstetricians and gynecologists, the training provided participants with essential technical skills, enabling them to integrate ultrasound technology into routine antenatal care. By mastering these diagnostic tools, midwives are now better equipped to identify high-risk pregnancies, monitor fetal development, and facilitate timely referrals.
By enhancing the diagnostic skills of midlevel health professionals ( Midwives , nurses and health officers ) , ESOG and WEEMA International are creating a more robust and responsive healthcare system that can meet the population's needs with increased accuracy and compassion.

Training for Improved Reproductive Health Services in Oromia
From June 21 to July 2, 2026, a vital initiative aimed at improving reproductive health services took place in Ethiopia’s Oromia region. The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG), in collaboration with the Oromia Regional Health Bureau, conducted a Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) training at the Adama Hospital CPD Center.
The program brought together 25 mid-level health professionals, including 6 female and 19 male participants from the West Shoa and West Hararghe Zones.
The training aimed to equip these health professionals with essential skills to deliver safe and high-quality reproductive health services in areas that have faced significant interruptions due to workforce turnover. As many facilities struggle to provide adequate care, local communities often find themselves traveling long distances to access necessary medical services, exacerbating health risks for women and families.
Through strengthened capacity for frontline healthcare providers and targeted efforts to bridge service gaps in underserved regions, ESOG and its partners demonstrate their unwavering commitment to evidence-based, equitable interventions that can save lives and strengthen Ethiopia's health system.
