📢 ESOG, Ministry Advance SMA Services through Consecutive National Workshops
The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, successfully conducted a series of consultative workshops from March 24–26, 2026, at Yaden Hotel in Bishoftu, bringing together key stakeholders, Technical Working Group members, experts, program specialists, technical consultants, and development partners.
The first workshop (March 24–25) focused on the development and harmonization of Social and Behavior Change materials for Self-Managed Abortion services. Through technical presentations, plenary discussions, group work, and interactive gallery walk sessions, participants reviewed existing and newly developed materials, identified key gaps, and provided structured feedback. Notably, discussions highlighted the absence of SMA-specific SBC tools in Ethiopia, leading to the development of new, evidence-based materials aligned with national guidelines and the Socio-Ecological Model.
Building on this, the second workshop on March 26, 2026 focused on reviewing the draft training curriculum for Provider-Assisted Self-Managed Abortion (PASMA) services. Participants engaged in technical presentations and collaborative review sessions to ensure the curriculum aligns with national policies, standards, and integrates with first trimester comprehensive abortion care. The workshop concluded with clear recommendations and a way forward for refining and finalizing the curriculum.
These back-to-back workshops mark a significant step toward strengthening quality, safe, and client-centered abortion care services in Ethiopia through improved communication strategies and capacity-building initiatives.
