Through the EQUAL 3D project, Humanity & Inclusion (HI) is supporting the introduction of 3D printing technology for prostheses and orthoses at the Jigjiga Physical Rehabilitation Center (JPRC), helping make rehabilitation services faster and more accessible for people with disabilities.
This innovation was recently featured by Somali Region TV (SRTV), highlighting how the technology is transforming rehabilitation services in the region.
With support from the Government of Luxembourg, the technology is being used at JPRC and Degehabur Hospital in Jarar Zone. It allows patients to be scanned closer to where they live, reduces the reputative visit to the center and significantly reduces production time compared to the manual/ traditional manufacturing method.
For beneficiaries like Jamal Sharif, who lost his leg five years ago, the impact goes beyond receiving a prosthesis: As he shared, “Before I received my prosthesis, I rarely left my home. Now I can walk anywhere on my own.”
His experience shows how access to rehabilitation and assistive technology can improve mobility, independence, and participation in everyday life.

Effective Humanitarian Mine Action depends on strong coordination between national authorities, humanitarian actors, local government structures, and communities.
With financial support from the Crisis and Support Centre (CDCS) of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Humanity & Inclusion (HI), in close coordination with the Ethiopian Mine Action Office (EMAO) and government structures, successfully transferred more than 10 tons of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) from Yechila Woreda Police Station to a newly constructed explosive ordnance storage site awaiting demolition.
The explosive items had been identified and collected over time from conflict-affected areas through the cooperation of local communities and HI’s Multitask Teams.
This achievement demonstrates how coordination at different levels; from community reporting and field response to engagement with regional government structures and the national mine action authority, can translate into concrete results and strengthen Humanitarian Mine Action efforts.
HI remains committed to strengthening coordination with relevant actors to support effective and sustainable Humanitarian Mine Action in Ethiopia.

Inclusive Education in Action!

Through the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) project, Humanity & Inclusion is supporting children with disabilities in Tarma-ber Woreda, North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region with the assistive devices and support they need to continue their education and participate more fully in school.

We are pleased to see this important work highlighted by our government partners. Education is a fundamental right for every child, and inclusive education helps make that right a reality for all.

As a global organization committed to advancing rehabilitation and inclusion, Humanity & Inclusion (HI) continues to promote approaches that ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

With generous funding from the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Humanity & Inclusion hosted the international seminar “Optimizing Child Potential: The Role of Rehabilitation in Early Childhood” in Addis Ababa from 4–8 May 2026. The event brought together more than 40 rehabilitation professionals, researchers, government representatives, from Health Ministers, INGOs, and National Associations from over 15 countries across Africa and Asia including Ethiopia, Mali, Nepal, Bangladesh, Palestine, Madagascar, and Vietnam to exchange experiences and strengthen approaches to early childhood rehabilitation.

The seminar started with opening remarks by Ariane Moayed, Embassy of Luxembourg and Ermias Mulatu, Ministry of Health. Through presentations, expert panel discussions, and field visits led by national and international experts, participants explored practical and inclusive ways to improve rehabilitation services for young children aged 0-6 years, particularly children with disabilities, developmental delays, and malnutrition. The conversations highlighted the importance of evidence-based, family-centered, and context-adapted approaches that support children’s development while strengthening families and communities.

The seminar concluded with shared reflections and renewed collaboration toward advancing inclusive early childhood rehabilitation across different contexts.

Humanity & Inclusion supported the successful delivery of the first International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Level-3 training conducted in Ethiopia.

Funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and delivered by ARTOS Global in Addis Ababa from 13 April to 6 May 2026, the training brought together eight EOD professionals from HI and EMAO to strengthen technical and operational capacity in advanced explosive ordnance disposal.

The intensive training enhanced participants’ competencies in advanced demolition procedures, disposal techniques, risk assessment, and compliance with IMAS and Ethiopian National Mine Action Standards. Participants also strengthened their understanding of fuze systems and advanced practical demolition skills required to safely manage high-risk explosive remnants of war and complex ordnance.

The closing ceremony was attended by General Tadesse Amelo, Head of EMAO, alongside representatives from the German Embassy, the French Embassy, UNMAS, and humanitarian mine action partners, highlighting continued collaboration to strengthen mine action efforts in Ethiopia. The training represents an important contribution to improving operational readiness and supporting safer communities in conflict-affected areas.

International Day for Mine Awareness & Assistance in Mine Action in Ethiopia

On 2 April 2026, the Government of Ethiopia, together with international partners, marked the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action at Jupiter Hotel in Addis Ababa under the theme “Invest in Peace, Invest in Mine Action.”

The event highlighted the continued threat posed by landmines and explosive remnants of war, particularly in conflict-affected regions of Ethiopia, where they continue to endanger lives and livelihoods.

During the ceremony, the French Ambassador Mr. Alexis Lamek delivered an important keynote speech reaffirming the French Government’s continuing commitment to supporting humanitarian mine action (HMA) efforts in Ethiopia. The Humanity & Inclusion (HI) Country Director, Mr. Raphael Nicolas Wittwer, also highlighted the humanitarian impact of explosive ordnance contamination and HI’s efforts to address its effects within affected communities.

United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) and Humanity & Inclusion (HI) offered a joint presentation in which they emphasized the enabling function of HMA across emergency and development settings providing a solid foundation for progress and achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

All mine action operators contributed to this successful and impactful event, showcasing the high level of collaboration within the HMA sector.
