Upward Ethiopia (UE) is registered in Ethiopia as a non-profit, non-partisan, board-led, non-governmental organisation (NGO). UE is its own legal entity, with registration number 5828 through the Authority for Civil Society Organisations (ACSO), registered on September 15, 2021. UE consists of six founding members as well as a finance and administration head, a grant manager, and a program coordin
ator. The board consists of three medical doctors of varying specialisations, a pharmacist with a qualification in Leadership Studies, and a school teacher. The sixth board member is Tamirat Hailu, the founder and director of Upward Ethiopia. Tamirat holds a diploma in Sanitary Sciences and a degree in Leadership and Development Studies. He has over 30 years of experience in both the Ministry of Health and within various NGOs. VISION
UE dreams of holistic well-being for all the people of Ethiopia and that they may lead transformed lives. MISSION
UE aims to contribute to the transformation of Ethiopians through:
- the development of families and children
- the empowerment of men, women, and youth; and
- the development of community-based health initiatives and bridging the gaps amongst people with disabilities, as well as environmental protection programs. CORE VALUES
UE’s core values include:
- impartiality, commitment, integrity, community ownership, and cultural sensitivity
- community ownership - the community must see the projects as their own in order to foster sustainable change; and
- cultural sensitivity - UE and all associated workers endeavor to adapt in order to fit with local norms and reach the hearts of the people
GOALS
(1) contribute to the transformation of the lives of highly vulnerable children through education and holistic support
(2) contribute to the holistic health of the target population through community-based health development programs
(3) empower the unemployed men, women, and youth through short-term training and other methods of support and development
(4) contribute to the perspective and role of the family in the overall development of their community and the country as a whole, by enhancing the capacity of the family in healthy marriages and raising children well
(5) bridge the development gaps within the country (environmental protection, reproductive health, and disability), working alongside faith-based organisations; and
(6) create income-generating activities to help sustain and reach the unreached areas of the country, with the objectives listed above
