The CDG revere Obbo Zegeye Asfaw Abdi who passed away leaving all the memories marked in deeds and words to generations. The final farewell took place with procession and picturesque performances at the Trinity Cathedral Church on Thursday May 6, 2026. The magnificent farewell ceremony covered speeches made by dignitaries; tributes of personalities; obituary organized by close friends and family members; and church service in which they praised his priceless contributions to the people of the country.

๐‘ถ๐’ƒ๐’ƒ๐’ ๐’๐’†๐’ˆ๐’†๐’š๐’† ๐‘จ๐’”๐’‡๐’‚๐’˜ ๐‘จ๐’ƒ๐’…๐’Š , always placed humanity at the center of his service at his official governmental responsibilities regardless of protocol bound ethical standards. He fulfilled his duties within the set boundaries yet went beyond the limits to serve the public by indulging in issues considered highly sensitive. The major one was about revolutionizing landholding system. He was the mastermind behind the motto โ€œLand to the Tillerโ€ which was a success that moved the vast population of the peasantry countrywide.
On his personal initiative and support of concerned persons, he established and run HUNDEE, a Non-Governmental Organization that successfully functioned with the rural community in changing lives of the needy and in making them aware of their rights to claim it accordingly. HUNDEE executed several projects designed to reach the marginalized and the unreached in far off rural areas.

Obbo Zegeye had been so creative and collaborative in implementing tabled ideas with the grassroots community on mind. Despite his wasted time behind bar for nearly 10 years with whom he shared common cause, his achievements in effecting the land tenure proclamation of 1975 was a landmark to be remembered in successive generations. His accomplishments under HUNDEE were lively acknowledged by community members who benefited from the interventions and functionary HUNDEE staff who learned from his innovative approaches of doing things.

The profound achievements; his charisma in leadership; his humane characters to all who approached him; and determination to โ€˜walk his talkโ€™ are the identifying traits of Obbo Zegeye which shall live on with all his friends, relatives, workmates, the community and generations in succession.

May his soul rest in peace in eternity! ๐Ÿ•Š

The Center for Development and Governance (CDG) conducted consultative workshop among the cross border communities of Miyo District of Ethiopia and Sololo County of Kenya on May2, 2026 in Miyo Town. The consultative meeting brought together fourteen (14) community representatives and government officials in Miyo-Sololo corridor to discuss Natural Resource Management challenges; identify root causes of the challenges; and seek solutions. From the Kenyan side the chief from Anona, CBRMCs and other key sector leaders and from Ethiopia the District Busa Gonofa and Agriculture office representatives attended the consultative meeting.

The discussion was organized under the Project titled โ€œ๐‘ด๐’๐’ƒ๐’Š๐’๐’Š๐’•๐’š ๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐‘ด๐’๐’—๐’†๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’•: ๐‘ช๐’“๐’๐’”๐’” ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’“๐’…๐’†๐’“ ๐‘น๐’†๐’”๐’Š๐’๐’Š๐’†๐’๐’„๐’† ๐’Š๐’ ๐‘ด๐’๐’š๐’‚๐’๐’†โ€ funded by Life and Peace Institute (LPI). The discussion was intended to prepare plan for the implementation of objectives of the Project.

Four main points cited in the agenda for discussion were project familiarization; challenges of natural resource management and joint use in the corridor; root causes of the challenges; and possible solution to the challenges. Multiple challenges and their causes were identified during the discussion of which deforestation, pastureland and water management, and transhumance were the major ones.

In the end the participants agreed to have further discussion to reach consensus on the solutions involving a wider community. They were convinced that the issues of natural resource management and sharing didnโ€™t get adequate attention even from the government relevant agencies. Therefore, they proposed the most relevant bodies to participate in upcoming meeting which is expected to prioritize issues and assign responsibilities including establishment of Joint Committee that monitor implementation of planed interventions.

Again since start of the reform the CDG focused on rights issues and democratic governance in connection to attaining lasting peace, he said.

๐Ÿ‘‰ After his briefing, Obbo Amanuel Adinew invited Administrator of Kura โ€“ Jidda Sub City Obbo Tamam Hussein to make opening speech. At the outset Obbo Taman Hussein started his speech as saying it was a surprise, which he didnโ€™t expect such noble activity so pertinent to the Sub City to be implemented jointly. He said Kura โ€“ Jidda largely cover farmers who couldnโ€™t get attention in areas of climate change mitigation in their agricultural activities. In this connection, he disclosed that Kura โ€“ Jidda is source of 60% water supply to Addis Ababa, which obviously demand protection and rehabilitation of vegetation cover so the rain water percolate into the ground preventing wastage in the form of runoff. In this connection he appreciated the planning of developing fruit bearing trees that would have dual benefits to community members. He underscored that experts of the field are expected to highly contribute towards success of the project.

โœ๏ธ Following the speech by the Administrator, staff of the CDG presented brief about the project in which he said the objective is to develop fruit tree seedlings which would benefit the farming community while contributing to mitigating harmful effects of climate change. He stated that preliminary activities like fencing the selected site and arrangement of safeguarding structure put in place. Among initials activities to follow he said are selection of appropriate fruit tree seedlings and selection of 160 direct beneficiaries from among the community in close collaboration with the administration, he said.

Later, participants of the Project Inauguration held lively discussion over the issue from different perspectives. Experts and officials from different sectors expressed their determination to collaborate with the CDG towards successful implementation of the project so that there would be replication of efforts to other adjacent areas.

Youth Volunteers who have been working with the Center for Development and Governance (CDG) for some years now. Following the two day online advocacy Plan held from Nov. 26-28 and consecutive revisiting of the plan with volunteer asocial media infulencer the CDG has been been conducting online advocacy on nexus between Peace vis-a-vis Human Rights, Rule of Law and Good Governance based on the victims account in conflict affected areas of Oromia. Therefore, this platform was held at the CDG head office on Friday May 1, 2026 to discus the online advocacy performance over the last three months. In their discussion they looked into achievements from a strong perspective; some challenges or gaps noted; and how to correct or improve them during the remaining plan period.

The โ€œCDG Social Media Influencers Teamโ€ appreciated the efforts of advocacy activity they engaged in sensitizing peace against the violence taking place in different parts of our country in general and Oromia in particular. They pointed out that the neutral approach used without blaming actors of conflict/violence responsible for the violence was a much better approach, which would make the antagonistic forces could make note of the damages to ponder over restoring peace. The issue of peace which many feared and avoided has now gained better attention at least with those who gained access to the images and information disseminated via the social media the CDG selected.

Volunteer Youth indicated that according to performance indicators, there was progress in reaching more audience, particularly reaching those non-followers. It was stated that online through CDG social media platforms, they reached over half a million audience with shares of more than 1,800 indicative of progress compared to the previous indication. In terms of the span, those who kept on watching for one minute to one point two minute accounted for 70%. Content performance in the stated period was high, indicating fast dissemination which even attracted non-followers to share, they said. This figure is much higher if those reached through the volunteer youthsโ€™ network is included.
The Youth Volunteers advocacy for peace is an integral part of the Project titled โ€œEnhancing Multi-Stakeholder Engagement and Action to Address Governance Issuesโ€ funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

Six siblings were left alone when their parents were killed by unknown gunmen. All are minors who were continuing education before the attack. Three are junior while the other two are elders of Magartu. Before they left their place of origin due to the attack, they were learning from grade three (3) to grade five (5). Magartu Addunna was fourth (4th) grade student. At the time of the interview Magartu Addunna was working as a shoe shiner while her two elders do day labor.

Magartu Addunna and her sisters and brothers were born in Jabo-dobban locality of Amuru District in Horro Guduru Wallagga Zone. She recalls that her father was killed while taking a patient to the health service and her mother killed in her attempt to trace the whereabouts of her husband. This was the information they got from the people. The children didnโ€™t get the chance to bury their parents.

Magartu Addunna, a smaller girl among the six siblings, who somehow acts as a responsible one told the story behind their displacement. She said there was violence in her locality which forced them flee the area for safety. At the time of the violence they couldnโ€™t even pick their clothing, she said.

Before death and displacement, the family were better off. They earned a living engaged in agriculture and tending the livestock. They were able to support the destitute. Magartu says they left all the resources behind at the time of the attack. The attackers burned down their house; took the livestock. The children left the area dispersed just to save their lives. The children never had the chance to see their parents again.

At the time of the interview, after four years of displacement, the children started schooling again. They buy school materials like notebook, school uniform, food and little other things using what they get from day labor and shoe shining. But Magartu spoke that the little income they got was not sufficient to fully cover their expenses. Nobody knows how much the orphaned children would be resilient to manage their lives on their own would be seen in the time to come.

The major issue is effect of violence on the lives of the community, particularly, the effect on children is extremely damaging. This has been acknowledged for generations. The above story is an example that testifies damaging effect of lack of peace on children.

Orphaned children who ought to get after-shock trauma treatment are left alone. They donโ€™t have any idea about whether they could stand the challenges ahead. The little income they get may not be sustainable on top of its being insufficient for their growth and development. Besides, they donโ€™t have mechanism to air their voice reach helping hands.

Tolaa Dhugoo used to live in East Shawa Zone Bosat District in a locality called Dongorree. Living in harmony with his family, he cultivated crops and harvested in abundance. The family had livestock and earned income in various other activities. They lived in a spacious and to the standard house as seen from perspectives of the local community.

The settled peaceful life of the family was shattered when suddenly masked armed group emerged and burned down the resources. The group burned the house with all the property in it. In the bizarre incident the livestock they had were scattered exposed to all forms risks. The family were left without choice except to flee the area for safety.

Initially, Tola had to seek for shelter somewhere in an urban center thereby considering for coping mechanism the way he didnโ€™t experience before. Once he somehow settled looking for day labor, he had to collect his dispersed young and old family members. He had to get back his parents who were already weak under impact of age whom he supported before displacement.

Tolaa Dhugoo acknowledges that other member of the community suffered in the same way as his suffered. He comments that when the once self-supportive family couldnโ€™t feed itself; couldnโ€™t educate the children; and couldnโ€™t lead normal life, the issue would be that of the country. He observed that community members of his former settlement area equally suffered. He says, โ€œFarmers who used to produce surplus seen at the level of investors became security guards with very little earning.โ€ They became security guards protecting buildings and properties of the rich in Adaama City.

On the other hand, Tolaa Dhugoo cites his witnessing shocking accounts of what happens along Ethiopia Djibouti route where drivers suffer in the hands of outlaws. He says the outlaws stop the drivers to demand for ransom with eventual attack if the demand was not met. He elaborated that unidentified individuals drag the drivers off the road into the bush and demand for heavy ransom. If the demand was not met, they cut ears; slit the throat or kill by shooting. The field is littered with corpses which the hyena feed on, he says. In some instances, bad smell of decomposing dead body could be felt by the road in Bosat, according to Tolaa.
The solution to the hardship citizens face is obviously restoration of peace. And the restoration demands concern and participation of all; not only the government. Tolaa suggests that part of the solution could be himself included, the elderly, mothers, women with Siinqee, and Gadaa Leaders who should work towards attaining peace. He says voices for peace should be heard. Indeed there should be sense of responsibility for the damages occurring too.
