Empowering Communities Through Legal Knowledge and Advocacy
Founded in 2019, Gedy-Law began as a grassroots initiative led by a group of passionate Ethiopian youths with legal backgrounds and expertise. Their mission was clear: to empower young people and the broader community by providing free legal
knowledge transfer and advice through accessible online platforms. Recognizing the widespread lack of legal awareness and the barriers many faces in accessing justice, the founders sought to bridge this gap by offering easily understandable legal resources, including blogs, mini-articles, videos, and illustrative content. Early Beginnings and Service Delivery
In its initial stages, Gedy-Law operated entirely through volunteer efforts, leveraging digital platforms to reach as many people as possible. The organization’s approach was simple yet effective disseminating legal information in engaging formats to educate the public on their rights and responsibilities. Additionally, Gedy-Law provided personalized legal advice through free messaging services, allowing individuals to seek guidance via phone or text. This inclusive model ensured that even those in remote areas or with limited resources could access legal support. Impact and Outreach
Over the years, Gedy-Law’s efforts have yielded remarkable results:
Legal Knowledge Dissemination: More than 11,000 individuals have engaged with the organization’s legal posts, gaining insights into various aspects of Ethiopian law. Free Legal Consultations: Over 300 people have directly benefited from personalized legal advice, helping them resolve disputes, understand their rights, and navigate legal processes. Community Education: Beyond legal matters, Gedy-Law has expanded its reach by addressing critical social issues such as climate change, peacebuilding, human rights, and youth empowerment, benefiting over 700,000 community members. These initiatives have had a transformative effect, particularly on Ethiopian youth. By improving legal literacy, Gedy-Law has enabled individuals to recognize understand their legal rights, and seek redress through proper channels. This empowerment has fostered greater confidence in engaging with legal systems, reducing vulnerability to exploitation and injustice. Transition to a Registered Civil Society Organization
The success of Gedy-Law’s volunteer-driven model demonstrated the urgent need for structured, scalable legal advocacy. Gedyon Megersa, one of the co-founders, spearheaded efforts to formalize the organization. On January 20, 2024, Gedy-Law achieved a significant milestone by securing official registration from the “Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Authority”. This transition marked a new chapter for Gedy-Law, transforming it from an informal youth-led initiative into a fully recognized, board-led civil society organization (CSO). As a registered non-governmental, non-profit entity Gedy-Law now operates with expanded legitimacy and capacity at the federal level enabling it to pursue broader objectives in legal empowerment, advocacy, and community empowerment.
