Its now been a year since we first stepped foot on Lokate and began our adventure taking her from Gandía to Almerimar. In this first year of PELAGICS field work we have come a long way, and Lokate has already began with its work:
- Taking data on marine megafauna
- Monitoring ghost gear and dangerous macroplastics
- Supporting the development of a deep-sea camera
- Preliminary observations of open sea plankton
This has been on an absolutely minimum budget, so we are currently working on grants which can get us more time out of the harbour, and being useful.
We wonder what year 2 of Lokate has in store!

🇪🇸 Ya hemos cumplido un año desde que empezó nuestra primera aventura a bordo Lokate desde Gandía a Almerimar. En este primer año de trabajo de campo de PELÁGICOS hemos avanzado en varios aspectos:
- Tomando datos de megafauna
- Monitorizando pesca fantasma y macroplasticos peligrosos
- Apoyando el desarrollo de una camara para mar profundo
- Datos preliminares de plankton de mar abierto
Todo esto ha sido con un presupuesto mínimo, por lo que ahora mismo estamos trabajando en buscar fondos que nos permitan salir más de puerto, y ser productivos.
A ver qué nos espera este segundo año con Lokate!

🇪🇸 Nuestro velero LOKATE lleva casi un año en Almerimar, un puerto vital para la conservación de la Mar desde los años 80, y queremos aprovechar para agradecer el trato recibido y la colaboración.
El apoyo de nuestro puerto base está siendo vital para poder desarrollar nuestros proyectos, y poco a poco ir creciendo como asociación.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Our research vessel LOKATE has been in Almerimar for almost a year. Almerimar has been a vital harbour for marine conservation since the 80s, and we want to show our appreciation for the collaboration.
Support from the harbour is vital for our programmes, and for us to keep growing as a non-profit.

🐬 Common dolphins are a reminder: the Mediterranean, and Ocean as a whole, is very much alive!

Despite the name "common dolphin", this species is endangered in the Mediterranean. Here off southern Spain lives the largest remaining population.

They are a fantastic indicator of the overall health of this ecosystem. Seeing them is always a good sign which puts a smile on our faces.

🐟 When you turn off the engine in the open sea, some of its wildlife often comes to have a closer look.

In recent months, inquisitive sunfish have become recurring visitors, hanging around LOKATE.

This last one, while on expedition with and hung around for about 10 minutes and even allowed us to take this GoPro video.

Science + Collaboration + Innovation 🪸

Pelagics has recently been working alongside ZSL and Int. SeaKeepers Society to trial a prototype camera which is being designed to democratise deep-sea science.

Current deep-sea imagery is extremely expensive and requires complex logistics. But what if it could be affordable and easy, and therefore available to countless research teams around the world?

This is the vision of the DEEP and CHEAP project, led by Dr Stephen Long of ZSL.

Waking early for us is around 3:30 AM, to leave the harbour at 4:00 AM, this way we are in deep water by sunrise 🌅
Perfect sea conditions are not always guaranteed, so we must take advantage when we have them.

Today we are celebrating World Ocean Day!And because of this we would like to spend a moment to admire this wonderful ecosystem and its amazing inhabitants, the pelagics, who are too often out of sight and out of mind.

💔 Loggerhead turtles still under threat from ghost gear in the western Mediterranean 💀

In our surveys on RV Lokate, one of our focuses is the detection of dangerous macro-garbage, and few are as hazardous to pelagic wildlife as ghost fishing gear.

Of these, we are still collecting some "ghost FADs" which are a rudimentary type of gear, using objects such as plastic bottles and twine. They are used in North Africa by communities with insufficient tools to fish correctly, and end up being swept over hundreds of miles across the Mediterranean.

We collected this one in the same area where we had sightings of over 5 loggerhead turtles within 2 hours. This highlights how these objects drift into important turtle habitats, resulting many times in deadly entanglement.

This is still an issue which is largely overlooked, but at PELAGICS we will keep recording it, removing gear, and sharing imagery.
