PELAGICS joins the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI), the "world's largest ghost gear collective impact alliance"

As a member organisation, our aim is to contribute to GGGI's mission of driving solutions to the problem of abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG, or "ghost gear").

Uploading data to the GGGI portal also aligns with our objective of sharing data openly for science and policy.

🌊 Today is World Rewilding Day!

Rewilding is knowing when and how to lend a helping hand, then trusting nature's own wisdom, allowing ecosystems to recover.

Follow our journey as we work towards a wilder Ocean.

❓ What did we fish while in the Chella Bank MPA?

We decided to do a quick analysis in the form of a reel, to show examples of the macroplastic pollution that drifts on the sea surface.

Find it interesting? Let us know!

Field notes from 24 Feb in the deep waters around the Chella Bank MPA seamount ⛰️

The forecast was fantastic, the wildlife sightings were even better 😁

Engine and coffee were on at 3:10 AM and RV Lokate made her slow way down, under an amazing starry sky, to be in deep waters of >800m by sunrise 🌠

We registered 5 pods of common dolphins and 1 pod of striped dolphins. There was plenty of fish activity, as well as seabirds 🐬

We registered a huge garbage patch where we took samples and removed dangerous objects for sea turtles such as polypropylene bags, in which they can become entangled 💀

We also notified due to the presence of a few large logs which pose a danger to navigation.

Bad weather returns now, but we made the most of this small window 👏🏼
