Differently Abled African Child (DAAC)
Differently Abled African Child is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and empowering disadvantaged individuals in society, particularly children living with disabilities. The organization works to promote inclusion, dignity, access to education, healthcare, and equal opportunities for all.
1. Definition of Disability
Disability refers to a physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairment that may limit a person’s ability to perform certain activities or participate fully in society.
According to the World Health Organization, disability is not just a health problem but a complex interaction between a person’s condition and environmental or societal barriers.
2. Types of Disability
Disabilities can be broadly categorized into the following types:
a) Physical Disabilities
These affect movement and mobility.
Examples: paralysis, limb loss, muscular disorders.
b) Sensory Disabilities
These affect one or more senses.
• Visual impairment (blindness)
• Hearing impairment (deafness)
c) Intellectual Disabilities
These involve limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior.
Examples: Down syndrome, developmental delays.
d) Psychosocial (Mental Health) Disabilities
These relate to mental health conditions that affect behavior, thinking, and emotions.
Examples: depression, anxiety disorders.
e) Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
These affect brain development and functioning, especially in children. (Explained in detail below.)
3. Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (Main Focus)
Definition
Neurodevelopmental disabilities are a group of conditions that begin in early childhood and affect the development of the brain and nervous system. These conditions impact learning, behavior, communication, and social interaction.
Common Types of Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
• Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
A condition affecting communication, behavior, and social interaction.
• Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
• Cerebral Palsy
Affects movement, muscle tone, and posture due to early brain injury.
• Learning Disabilities
Such as dyslexia (reading difficulty), dysgraphia (writing difficulty), and dyscalculia (math difficulty).
• Intellectual Developmental Disorder
Significant limitations in intellectual functioning and daily living skills.
Causes
Neurodevelopmental disabilities may result from:
• Genetic factors
• Complications during pregnancy or birth
• Infections
• Malnutrition
• Environmental factors
