We’ve been travelling in vans, on and off, for almost ten years, and I don’t recall ever having a backdrop quite like this.

As incredible as this spot is, we won’t be staying tonight. There’s rain forecast for the early hours, and it’s not the sort of place you want to be when the weather turns.

We’re trundling slowly north towards Cañón Rojo de Teruel. It should place us right in the middle of these badlands for the weekend, with Albarracín and Teruel both within easy reach.

The plan is to spend a couple of nights here, rack up a few no spend days, then drift up to Zaragoza late on Sunday evening.

I’ve no idea what we’ve ordered, but our protein intake is looking good for the day. Tapas has to be one of the best ways to eat. Smee has woken up and agrees.

Update - It turns out we had: Chorizo in Cider, Black Pudding in Lard and Manchago cheese with olive oil and rosemary.

We also had ribs in lard, but they arrived later, we didn’t take a picture so we didn’t appear too piggy. We did over order though.

Lately I’ve been thinking about what “value” actually looks like in life. Not in a financial sense, but in how a day works out and the return we get on it.

This morning was slow. Another coffee, no urgency at all, we’ll head off when we’re ready. It feels like a small thing but, it sets the tone for the rest of the day.

There are still commitments, of course. Life doesn’t just switch off, but having a say in when and how they happen has changed things more than I expected.

Sometimes, if I feel a bit unsettled, I picture what 11am on a Thursday used to be like. Not in a negative way, just as a reference point.

It makes me realise that, for now at least, control over my time matters more than most of the things I used to chase. And having a say in how it’s spent feels like the real return.
