Our purpose is to improve and maintain the health and the well-being of the cats in Playa Blanca and the surrounding areas by providing: regular food and clean water; veterinary care and TNR. We are here to care for the stray cats of Playa Blanca and the surrounding areas and to support the people who care for them – especially for those who have no or a low income due to the economic situation on the island. Our primary purpose is to improve and maintain the health and the well-being of the cats in Playa Blanca and the surrounding areas by:

• Providing regular food and clean water
• Providing routine veterinary care and further care should they become ill
• Providing emergency veterinary care
• Providing cats recuperating from injury or illness with temporary accommodation and veterinary care
• Carrying out Trap-Neuter-Release campaigns to reduce the number of unwanted kittens.
• Providing rescued cats and kittens with responsible foster homes
• Carrying out the responsible adoption of cats and kittens
• Working with residents and holidaymakers to increase awareness and engage their support
• Working with local councils to increase awareness and responsibility
• Working with media to increase awareness and engage support
• Holding social events to raise funds
• Engaging in not-for-profit enterprises to raise funds

❤️🐾 HUGO – A LITTLE RAY OF HOPE 🐾❤️

Dear Cat Friends,

We wanted to share a little update about our precious Hugo. ❤️

Hugo is eating again… and he’s enjoying every single bite! 🥹

He’s happily eating the special pâté we’ve prepared for him, as well as the boiled chicken that his wonderful foster mum Miriam lovingly cooks for him.

And something truly touching happened… Hugo has even started grooming himself again. ❤️

Something so simple for a healthy cat, but incredibly difficult and painful for Hugo because of his terrible mouth problems.

I don’t want to get my hopes up too high… because when things go wrong, the heartbreak is even greater.

But right now, we can see a tiny little light of hope. 🥹❤️

Please, please send all your love, positive vibes and good thoughts to this beautiful, brave boy.

He has suffered so much. He deserves a little happiness, a little peace… and a chance. ❤️🐾

Come on, Hugo. We’re all rooting for you. ❤️

🐾❤️ TWO BEAUTIFUL DEVONSHIRE REX GIRLS NEED A FOREVER HOME ❤️🐾

Please help us find a loving home for these two gorgeous girls in Lanzarote.

Aged 5 and 6, both girls are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and have all their paperwork.

Sadly, due to their humans’ ongoing health issues and the need to travel regularly to Belgium, they are looking for a new family who can give them the time, love and companionship they deserve.

🏡 They must stay together.
🐱 They are indoor cats only.
❤️ They need a loving home with plenty of attention and affection.

This is a very difficult decision for their loving parents, who only want what is best for their girls.

🐾 HUGO – SAD NEWS ABOUT HIS HEALTH 💔

Dear Cat Friends,

We have received the latest veterinary report about our beloved Hugo, following his examination on 14 October.

I won’t bore you with complicated medical terms. I am not a veterinarian, and I certainly don’t pretend to be one. But I would like to explain, in simple words, what is happening to Hugo.

Unfortunately, the news is not good. 💔

Hugo has been losing weight and eating less and less. His mouth is severely inflamed and painful, making eating very difficult.

However, the biggest concern is his blood test results.

Hugo has severe anaemia, meaning he has far too few red blood cells. His white blood cells, which help fight infections, are also dangerously low, as are his platelets, which help stop bleeding.

The veterinarian is very concerned that his bone marrow, which produces these blood cells, is no longer working properly.

The cause is still unknown. It could be related to a virus or possibly cancer. His tests for FIV and FeLV were negative, but this does not completely rule out every possibility.

Hugo also has serious arthritis affecting his spine.

Because of his very poor blood results, putting him under general anaesthesia for dental treatment is currently considered too dangerous.

He has received supportive treatment and medication to help his bone marrow and stimulate his appetite. His condition will be reassessed, but the veterinary prognosis is unfortunately poor.

For now, we can only hope that he responds to treatment.

Our priority is, and always will be, Hugo’s comfort, dignity and quality of life. We will never allow him to suffer unnecessarily.

After everything this poor boy has already been through, including losing both ears to cancer, it is heartbreaking to see him facing yet another battle.

❤️ Veterinary tests and treatments are extremely expensive. If you would like to help us cover Hugo’s medical bills, any donation, however small, would be deeply appreciated.

🐾❤️ A CATIO – ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS I’VE EVER MADE! ❤️🐾

As someone who strongly believes cats should not be allowed to roam freely outdoors, I have unfortunately witnessed far too many heartbreaking situations through my volunteer work. Things I wouldn’t wish on anyone or any cat.

That’s why I believe having a catio built was one of the smartest decisions I’ve ever made!

My cats absolutely LOVE it! They enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and outdoor life, while I have complete peace of mind knowing they are safe. ❤️

🐱 If you’re considering a catio, don’t hesitate! It’s a fantastic way to give your cats the best of both worlds: outdoor freedom in a safe, protected environment.

🚨 24-HOUR VETERINARY EMERGENCY CARE – WHAT DOES SPANISH LAW SAY?

🐾 Did you know that Spanish law establishes clear responsibilities for local authorities regarding emergency veterinary care and the welfare of community cats?

Under Spanish Animal Welfare Law 7/2023, two articles are particularly important.

⚖️ ARTICLE 22.1 – 24-HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICES

Spanish law requires municipalities to provide an emergency service for the collection and veterinary care of lost and abandoned animals, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends and public holidays.

This service may be provided directly by the municipality or through contracted organisations.

⚖️ ARTICLE 39.1(c) – COMMUNITY CATS

The law also establishes that local authorities are responsible for ensuring veterinary healthcare for community cats requiring medical attention, using the services of a registered veterinary professional, subject to the applicable regional legislation.

Community cats are not automatically classified as abandoned animals, but they have their own legal protections.

🐈 WHAT IS HAPPENING IN LANZAROTE?

In May 2026, representatives from Lanzarote’s municipalities, including Yaiza, discussed introducing a coordinated 24-hour veterinary emergency service.

However, we have not yet confirmed whether this island-wide service is operational.

🐾 WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR LANZAROTE CAT PROTECTION?

Our volunteers regularly rescue injured, sick and vulnerable cats, sometimes late at night, on Sundays or during public holidays.

But what happens when a cat is seriously injured and immediate veterinary assistance is needed?

Animal welfare cannot simply stop when veterinary clinics close.

We believe every municipality should clearly communicate its emergency procedures, including whom to contact outside normal working hours and how community cats requiring urgent treatment will be assisted.

Lanzarote Cat Protection will be seeking clarification from the relevant authorities regarding these responsibilities.

Because an animal’s life should never depend on what day of the week it is. ❤️🐾

🐾❤️ UPDATE ON OUR SWEET HUGO ❤️🐾

Our brave Hugo had another veterinary check-up on Wednesday.

He is still eating well, active and comfortable at home, but unfortunately his mouth is in very poor condition, with severe gum inflammation and bleeding. He is also continuing to lose weight despite having a good appetite.

💔 Hugo is receiving weekly treatment, but he needs further tests to check his kidneys and thyroid, as well as X-rays, before the vets can decide whether dental extractions are possible.

We are doing everything we can to help our lovely boy feel better.

❤️ Please keep Hugo in your thoughts. He has already been through so much and deserves all the love and care we can give him.
