Aquaponics United

Aquaponics United Aquaponics NGO

Aquaponics United (AU) is a non-governmental organization that was created with the aim of promoting and encouraging the use of aquaponic systems as a method of sustainable and efficient agriculture. Our organization believes that aquaponics can provide an alternative to traditional farming practices that are often resource-intensive and harmful to the environment. By combining aquaculture and hyd

roponics, aquaponics creates a closed system that recirculates water and nutrients, producing both fish and plants in a symbiotic relationship.

Dear Aquaponics Community,

Please join us on Wednesday, November 26 at 10 AM ET for a deep dive into one of the most innovative aquaponics projects happening today.

The AWARE Project team will introduce AWARE (Aquaponics from Wastewater Reclamation), a Horizon Europe initiative pioneering the use of reclaimed municipal wastewater to safely grow high-quality fish and vegetables in circular aquaponic systems.

You’ll learn how advanced treatment technologies such as ozonation, vacuum UV, and biofiltration are transforming wastewater into a resource for food production with zero impact on natural water bodies and strong resilience to climate change.

The session will share:
• Key results from Cycle One (2022–2024)
• System installation and validation in Castellana Grotte, Italy
• Water quality, food safety, and experimental growth results
• Progress in regulatory dialogue and stakeholder engagement
• Next steps for upscaling, market replication, and European value chain development

This is a rare opportunity to explore the technical, regulatory, and societal challenges of water reuse in food systems and what they mean for the future of aquaponics.
