Heritage for Peace

Heritage for Peace We are dedicated to the belief that heritage can provide a common ground for dialogue and therefore is a tool for peace building. Follow us

Heritage for Peace is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support all countries in conflict in their efforts to protect and safeguard cultural heritage during the armed conflict. Heritage for Peace believes that heritage can serve as a key focus of dialogue between communities, nations, and ethnic and religious groups: heritage can, in fact, become a basis for constructing peace. Heritag

e for Peace is unique in that its special focus is on protecting cultural heritage during conflicts: by providing training and support in heritage protection to local communities, Heritage for Peace works to mitigate damage to Syrian’s heritage and lay the groundwork for reconstruction. Through cultural heritage the Syrian people have a foundation on which to build their future, and it should thus be protected. Our goals are to offer aid to heritage professionals working in conflict situations, and to encourage those who may be in a position to do so. In order to achieve that, we aim to provide:

- a point of contact between those in Syria and the international heritage community
- a platform for information and support
- assistance in capacity building for the future. We are an entirely voluntary organisation.

Al-Qahira Citadel: Restoring Heritage, Reclaiming Identity
We are grateful to see Al-Qahira Citadel return to the public spotlight through a recent Al Jazeera report documenting the restoration of the citadel’s main gate — a symbolic and practical step toward safeguarding one of Yemen’s most important cultural landmarks.
This coverage highlights how cultural heritage remains a living part of urban identity and collective memory in Taiz, a city that continues to show remarkable resilience despite years of conflict. Here, restoration is not only about conserving historic fabric, but about reaffirming meaning, continuity, and belonging.
The restoration of the main gate marks the first phase of the Al-Qahira Citadel Rescue Project, implemented in Taiz under the leadership of Heritage for Peace, funded by the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), with the support of the U.S. Mission to Yemen, and carried out in partnership with the General Authority for Antiquities and Museums – Taiz Branch. This project demonstrates the value of strong international–local collaboration in protecting heritage in conflict-affected contexts.
During the first year, approximately 90% of the main façade of the gate was restored following rigorous conservation standards, combining documentation, architectural surveys, traditional techniques, and compatible materials.
This initial intervention lays the groundwork for future rehabilitation phases and sends a clear message: heritage protection is achievable when commitment, expertise, and partnership come together. As reflected in Al Jazeera’s coverage, safeguarding heritage is not only a cultural endeavor — it is an investment in identity, resilience, and the future.

In the heart of Taiz city stands the historic Al-Qahira Castle, a timeless witness to centuries of civilization and culture. Dating back to ancient times, this fortress is more than a stone structure—it is a symbol of Yemeni identity, reflecting the stories of past generations and the aspirations of those yet to come.

However, time has not been kind to it. The castle suffered severe damage as a result of the conflicts and unrest that have afflicted the country.

Amid these difficult circumstances, hope arrived from afar: funding from U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, along with the efforts of the Spanish organization Heritage for Peace and Yemen’s General Authority for Antiquities and Museums in Taiz, helped revive the dream of restoring the castle.

This initiative was more than a restoration project—it was a call to preserve Yemen’s cultural heritage and safeguard the nation’s historical identity.

Yesterday, at MONDIACULT 2025, we were proud to launch a very special publication dedicated to the memory of René Teijgeler, co-founder of Heritage for Peace.

📘 “The Crises–Cultural Heritage Nexus: The Interplay of Crises and Cultural Heritage: Mutual Impacts and Implications”
This publication grew out of René’s vision to advance research on heritage protection during crises, with a strong emphasis on its link to peacebuilding. Following in-depth conversations with him, a four-year partnership between Heritage for Peace and Cultural Emergency Response (CER) was established to ensure that cultural heritage is integrated into crisis response, humanitarian aid, peacebuilding, and disaster management.
This white paper marks the first milestone of that partnership, examining the intersections of cultural heritage and crisis, and showing how safeguarding heritage can strengthen resilience and help communities heal and rebuild.
🙏 We are deeply grateful to the editorial team — Emma Cunliffe, Gaia Bedini, Eva Licci, Ginevra Rollo, and Iona Volynets — and to CER for their collaboration.
This publication is both a contribution to global dialogue and a tribute to René’s enduring legacy. May his vision continue to inspire all of us committed to protecting heritage in times of crisis.

Our 2025 conference is off to a great start!
This morning, we've heard some great words about the importance of cultural heritage protection from Dr. Isabel Díaz Carretero, VHRH Princess Dana Firas, Gemma Aubarell-Solduga, and Dr. Isber Sabrine.
Krista Pikkat presented the UNESCO Directorate of the Culture and Emergency Entity.
We've then discovered new research and findings from Pr. Neil Brodie about the Illicit Trade in Cultural Heritage in Syria in an amazing key note lecture.
Lastly, our first panel "Policies for Heritage Protection in Crisis" presented new institutional and grassroots perspectives, and explored challenges and opportunities for inclusive, flexible and conflict-sensitive frameworks.
(Dr Juan Jose Ibañez, Krista Pikkat, Emma Cunliffe, Vanessa Fraga Prol, Kristen Hopper)

The conference continues this afternoon! Join us at 15h for our two next panels and closing plenary.
