As one of the first events under their new TerraX environmental sustainability programme, Prosus joined us in late March at Landgoed Rorik in Beverwijk alongside their portfolio companies, OLX and Just Eat Takeaway. Together, they turned their environmental commitments into tangible action. Reaching a milestone of 1,000 trees planted was incredible, but the best part was seeing everyone working side-by-side, laughing through the weather chaos, and building a natural legacy that will be here long after we're gone.🌳
The team arrived brimming with energy and commitment, and quickly set to work at two different locations on the site, undeterred by the Dutch spring weather, which threw every element in its armory at us: from sunshine, wind and snow, to hail, rain and sleet!
One group's mission was to plant a biodiverse, goat-proof hedge around the perimeter of an apple orchard. Once grown, the hedge will perform multiple functions by boosting biodiversity and protecting the apple trees from wind, while also providing a nibble-resistant barrier (the inside of the hedge is composed of spiky plants) to contain goats and sheep. These animals will in turn be used as Landgoed Rorik's sustainable lawn mowers to keep the grass manageable, fertilising the land as they go - win, win! 💚
The second group rolled up their sleeves in an espalier orchard, planting native Dutch apple trees in rows and carefully attaching them to wires to keep them strong against the wind and make harvesting easier. These trees are used by the estate to make organic apple juice and cider, which are then sold to help sustain the estate's regenerative farming practices.
By the end of the day, everyone had rosy cheeks and a great sense of achievement. The day was rounded off in the estate's glasshouse restaurant, munching on food made from the Landgoed Rorik's produce, washed down by cider and apple juice.
