🌱 5 metres and growing!

During a recent monitoring visit to a food forest near Heerhugowaard 🇳🇱, we found the young trees in very good shape, with a strong survival rate across the site.

Some have already grown to over 5 metres, while the vast majority are showing healthy growth and have established well in their surroundings.
It's great to see the planting developing into a thriving part of the local landscape. 🌳

Carbon removal projects can do more than capture CO₂ 🌍. They can create local jobs and generate real benefits for the communities around them.

A great (and green 💚) surprise for the partners and exchange students at the University of Windesheim

During the Conference, the University chose a meaningful and impactful way of making a gift: supporting nature restoration in Europe 🌳

Spending his 43rd birthday planting 500 trees in the pouring rain with 30 friends and family turned into an unforgettable memory for Tomas Simons, Managing Partner at Waterland Private Equity.

This is exactly what we love about planting events: they have a way of becoming memorable whether you plan it or not. Waterland is constantly looking for ways to become more sustainable and to offset its emissions close to home, and this planting day was a perfect example of that commitment.

"This recent visit to the planting site gave me a chance to see how the trees are doing.

I was pleased to see that many of them have grown considerably and are in good health, especially considering the recent heat and drought. The chestnuts and winter lindens were particularly impressive, and I also noticed lots of natural regeneration, with young oak and birch appearing throughout the site.

Not every species is developing in the same way, but overall, it was encouraging to see how much new growth is already contributing to this developing forest." 🌱

How do you make climate resilience tangible for the next generation?
Take the classroom outside. 🌳

Children can learn about climate change, biodiversity and forest health through books and presentations, but getting their hands into the soil adds a different kind of understanding.

That's what we saw in April in Heidenreichstein, Austria 🇦🇹, where 54 pupils from Volksschule Heidenreichstein joined , and Life Terra for a day of forest education and planting.

The pupils learned about the challenges facing Austrian forests, including bark beetle outbreaks and the increasing vulnerability of spruce forests in a changing climate. They then put that knowledge into practice, planting 630 trees from three climate-resilient species.

Sometimes the most memorable lessons happen outside, with a tool in your hands. 🌱

This summer more than 600,000 hectares burned across the EU. 🔥

Around 47,000 of them were in the Landes de Gascogne, southwest France: a forest made up of 75% maritime pine, planted in monoculture, row after row, for hundreds of kilometres.

Monocultures don't start fires, but they feed them. When fire broke out, it found no resistance, no diversity to slow it down, no natural barriers to stop it. 🌲
This is why Life Terra advocates for planting biodiversity, to build forests that can face what monocultures cannot.

Diverse forests have several layers of vegetation that retain moisture 💧 and keep temperatures low. Mixed species create natural barriers that slow fire down, giving it less fuel and fewer paths to spread.

The rule is simple: when a forest burns, plant a forest back, but not just any forest, a diverse, resilient one. 🌿

🇳🇱 The real test came with the heat. The trees held up.

We visited the Heer Ikigai planting site in Stompetoren, just after a severe heatwave in the Netherlands.

The trees that we donated around the food forest were in excellent health. There were only a few gaps where trees had died, meaning most of the saplings have established successfully.

Interestingly, the trees aren’t directly irrigated. The owner lets them develop deeper roots and rely on water further down in the soil. They do get some indirect benefit from irrigation of the nearby vegetable plots.

With another dry period expected and little rain in the forecast, the trees will have another test ahead.

For now, they’re holding up well. Good establishment and thoughtful management can make a real difference when temperatures rise and rain stays away.

🌱 The future of MRV for carbon projects: the Digital Twin app

NAT5 by ASES is developing a new application designed to make carbon and biodiversity project management and certification simpler, smarter and more transparent.

The aOCP Digital Twin app will bring multiple certification projects together in one user-friendly platform, providing access to real-time technical information throughout the entire project journey, from eligibility and certification to digital monitoring.

The app will provide valuable insights for:
🔹 Project developers: understand project eligibility and navigate the certification process
🔹 Credit buyers: access real-time information on project quality and associated risks
🔹 Certification teams: manage and assess multiple projects more efficiently

At Life Terra, we use the ASES On-Chain Protocol (aOCP) developed by NAT5 to certify our carbon removal projects. This new application represents another step towards making carbon project data more traceable and simpler to manage.

Europe lost over 600,000 hectares to wildfires this summer. That's an area larger than Luxembourg gone in smoke, ash, and lost habitat.

But a burned forest doesn't have to be a permanent scar. With the right approach, it can become the foundation of something healthier, more resilient, and more alive than what stood there before.

The golden rule shouldn’t be just about putting trees back in the ground. It should also be about replanting better: more species, more biodiversity, more resilience for the fires that will inevitably come again.
