🧠 If you are a neurosurgeon who wants to start an epilepsy surgery track, the first essential step is to learn the language of epilepsy.

Epilepsy surgery is not like tumor surgery. The target is not simply “the lesion”—it is the epileptogenic network, defined through a structured presurgical evaluation and multidisciplinary decision-making (MDT). To be an active epilepsy surgeon, you need to understand how epileptologists and neurophysiologists think, how EEG conclusions are formed, and how those conclusions translate into a surgical plan.

For this reason, ECSE is introducing a dedicated Surgeon Track within our Integrated Clinical EEG & Epilepsy Course—designed to equip surgeons with the essentials of EEG and presurgical evaluation so you can confidently participate in MDT meetings, contribute to discussions, and understand when to proceed, when to pause, and when invasive monitoring (sEEG) is needed.

📚 Surgeon Track — What you will cover (selected modules)

Surgeons will attend a curated set of course lectures focused on clinical decision-making:

(background, symmetry, sleep basics—what “normal” looks like)
Module 2: Interictal discharges & localization
(IFCN criteria, lateralization/localization, key pitfalls)

Module 4: Focal semiology & electro-clinical framework
(how semiology supports localization and planning)
Module 5: Presurgical evaluation
(anatomo-electro-clinical hypothesis, imaging MRI/PET/fMRI, ESI/MELD/AI overview, when to consider sEEG)
Module 6: Intraoperative monitoring (IOM)
(ECoG concepts, after-discharges, stimulation mapping fundamentals)
Module 8: Surgical techniques
(resective, disconnective, minimally invasive—linked to presurgical hypothesis)

ECSE is launching a **100+ hours Integrated Clinical EEG & Epilepsy Course**. The aim is to teach EEG as it is used in real practice: **EEG in the context of epilepsy diagnosis, syndrome recognition, management decisions, localization, and presurgical evaluation**—so your EEG report becomes a **clinical report**, not only a technical description.

**Course structure (3 months | 9 modules):**
1) **Lectures (whole group):** **2 live sessions/week** covering the module content (normal EEG → interictal/ictal EEG → syndromes → presurgical evaluation, etc.).
- Each lecture will also be **repeated 3 additional times** during the week to accommodate different schedules/time zones.
2) **Workshops (small groups):** participants will be divided into **mentored groups** for hands‑on EEG reading, discussion, and report writing.
- **Workshops will NOT be recorded**, and each group will attend based on an agreed schedule.

Meet the teaching team behind the ECSE Integrated Clinical EEG & Epilepsy Course.

This course is delivered by a multidisciplinary group combining pediatric and adult epilepsy practice with strong clinical neurophysiology expertise. Our team has real, high‑impact experience: we became the first team to perform sEEG in Egypt, and we have contributed to 100+ epilepsy surgery cases through structured presurgical evaluation, EEG/video‑EEG interpretation, intraoperative monitoring, and multidisciplinary decision‑making.

Faculty include Dr Ahmed Elkeiey, Dr Ahmed Nassar, and Dr Ahmed Saied (pediatric neurologists with a dedicated epilepsy and neurophysiology focus), Dr Alshaimaa Shabaan (an experienced adult neurologist with strong experience in both adult and pediatric epilepsy), and Dr Hesham Nafea (an experienced clinical neurophysiologist with extensive expertise in presurgical evaluation and intraoperative monitoring)—bringing practical, real‑world EEG teaching directly from the epilepsy surgery pathway.

بكل مشاعر الاعتزاز والامتنان نُحيّي اليوم ذكرى حياةٍ صنعَتْ تاريخاً وتركَتْ إرثاً طبياً وإنسانياً باقياً في مصر والمنطقة.
المرحوم البروفيسور الدكتور أسامة الغنّام — رحمه الله — كان رائداً حقيقياً في جراحة المخ والأعصاب، ومعلماً أسستْه الخبرة والإنجاز: أستاذ جراحة المخ بجامعة الأزهر، رئيس قسم الجراحة، عميد كلية الطب، ورئيس الجمعية المصرية لجراحي المخ عام 2003، ومؤسس ومؤثر في مسيرة (مستشفي تاون).

هو الذي حمل حلم الصغير القادم من صعيد مصر إلى واقعٍ عيانيّ: إدخال تقنيات متقدمة في مجال جراحات المخ والاعصاب وقام بإجراء أكثر من عشرة آلاف عملية جراحية في المخ والعمود الفقري. وضع أول لبنة لمركز جراحة أعصاب متخصص عام 1992، ثم شيد أساس مستشفي تاون في 2002، وبقيت رؤيته منارةً تُهتدى بها الأجيال.
رحم الله الفقيد وأسكنه فسيح جناته، وسنظل نعمل بكل جدٍّ وإخلاص لنكون عند حسن ظنّه ونحقق الأمل الذي زرعه في قلوبنا وقلوب المرضى.

حشد طبي كبير مصري هندي ينجح في تسجيل كهربي عميق للمخ..

مصر تحقق إنجازًا علميًا ونقلة كبيرة في مجال تشخيص وجراحات الصرع

خبير هندي: مصر يمكن أن تصبح مركزاً إقليمياً مهماً لعلاج الصرع وفق أعلى المعايير العالمية

في إنجاز طبي يُعَدُّ الأول من نوعه في مصر وأفريقيا، أعلنت « جمعية أطفال مصر لمقاومة الصرع » (ECSE) عن نجاح تنفيذ أول عملية تسجيل كهربي عميق للمخ (Stereo‑EEG)، وخلص حشد علمي شارك في أسبوع طبي وتدريبي نظمته الجمعية مع مستشفى ريلا الهندي، وهو أحد المراكز العالمية الرائدة في جراحة الصرع والجراحات الوظيفية للمخ عقد بالقاهرة قبل أيام إلى أن هذا التسجيل الكهربي العميق للمخ يُمثِّل قمة ما توصَّلت إليه التكنولوجيا العالمية في تشخيص وعلاج وجراحة الصرع، واعتبروا أن إدخال هذه المنظومة إلى مصر يمثل نقلة نوعية كبيرة على مستوى المنطقة العربية وأفريقيا.

وقال الأطباء الذين شاركوا في هذا الحدث العلمي إن عملية التسجيل الكهربي العميق الذي أجري خلال الأسبوع العلمي يعتمد على أعلى معايير الرابطة الدولية لمكافحة الصرع (ILAE)، واستخدام أحدث أنظمة الملاحة العصبية وبرامج التخطيط الجراحي وأجهزة رسم المخ العميق المعتمدة في المراكز المتقدمة في أوروبا وأمريكا.

وشارك في الأسبوع العلمي والتدريبي أكثر من مائتي خبير وأستاذ في مجالات تشخيص ومعالجة وجراحات الصرع عند الأطفال والبالغين في الهند ومصر وليبيا ودول الخليج العربية، واستضافته أكاديمية الأميرة فاطمة للتعليم الطبي المهني خلال شهر نوفمبر ٢٠٢٥.

ويقول الدكتور محسن القيعي أستاذ طب مخ وأعصاب الأطفال بجامعة الأزهر ورئيس الأسبوع العلمي إن «هدفنا النهائي أن يحصل الطفل أو الشاب المصاب بالصرع المقاوم للأدوية في مصر على أحدث ما وصل إليه العلم من تشخيص وعلاج دون أن يضطر للسفر إلى الخارج، وأن يكون لدينا مركز مصري ‑ عربي معتمد دولياً في هذا المجال.»

ووجِّه الدكتور القيعي الشكر باسم الأسبوع العلمي والجمعية لزملائها من الأطباء المصريين في مختلف الجامعات والمستشفيات، وللفريق الطبي الهندي من مستشفى ريلا على تعاونه ودعمه العلمي والعملي، داعياً الجهات المعنية إلى استمرار دعم برامج التدريب وبناء القدرات في جراحة الصرع، حتى تتحوّل هذه الخطوة الأولى إلى خدمة مستمرة لآلاف المرضى في مصر والعالم العربي.

وأوضح أن تعاون « جمعية أطفال مصر لمقاومة الصرع» مع مستشفى ريلا الهندي المتخصص يتجاوز حدود الأسبوع العلمي، إذ يجري حالياً إعداد برنامج زمالة إكلينيكية يمتد لعام كامل، يشارك فيه أطباء مصريون بالتناوب مع فريق ريلا، بهدف إجراء 10–15 حالة sEEG وجراحات صرع معقَّدة خلال العام، ونقل الخبرة الكاملة في مجالات اختيار الحالات، والتخطيط الجراحي، وزرع الأقطاب، وقراءة التسجيلات المعمقة، وعلاج أورام الوطاء بالتردد الحراري (Hypothalamic Hamartoma RFA).

وحول الإنجاز العلمي الذي تحقق خلال الأسبوع sEEG المصري - الهندي»، يقول الدكتور أحمد القيعي، عضو اللجنة المنسقة إن «هذا الإنجاز هو ثمرة سنوات من العمل في بناء فرق وطنية متخصصة في تقييم حالات الصرع المقاوم للأدوية، والعمل مع شركائنا في مستشفى ريلا لنقل الخبرة إلى مصر»، مضيفاً أن الهدف ليس تنفيذ حالة أو حالتين، بل إنشاء برنامج وطني مستدام يقدِّم خدمة على مستوى المراكز المصنَّفة عالمياً كمراكز من الدرجة الرابعة وفق تصنيف ILAE.

وأشار إلى أن «الأسبوع المصري الهندي شهد حضور نخبة من أساتذة الأعصاب وجراحي المخ والأعصاب وأطباء العناية المركزة من مختلف الجامعات المصرية، إلى جانب فريق متكامل من الخبراء الهنود من مستشفى ريلا، ضمّ أطباء الصرع وجراحي المخ والأعصاب وخبراء رسم المخ الفسيولوجيا العصبية. وتضمن البرنامج سلسلة من الاجتماعات متعددة التخصصات لاختيار الحالات، ومحاضرات علمية متقدمة، وورش عمل عملية على أحدث النظم الملاحية وبرامج التخطيط الجراحي، إضافة إلى نقل مباشر من غرف العمليات ليتابعها الأطباء المهتمون بهذا المجال.

من جانبه أوضح الدكتور ناتيشان داموداران، جرّاح المخ والأعصاب البارز بمستشفى ريلا والمسئول عن الإشراف الجراحي على البرنامج، أن «التسجيل العميق للمخ يسمح لنا بتحديد البؤرة الصرعية بدقة مليمترية، حتى في الحالات التي تبدو فيها الفحوصات التقليدية مثل الرنين المغناطيسي ورسم المخ السطحي غير حاسمة»، مشيداً بالمستوى المهني للفريق المصري والقدرة على استيعاب هذه التكنولوجيا المعقَّدة في فترة زمنية قصيرة.

أما الدكتور دينيش نايك، أحد روّاد هذا المجال في آسيا، فيقول: «ما رأيناه في هذا الأسبوع من حماس وتعطش للعلم من الأطباء المصريين يجعلنا متفائلين بأن مصر يمكن أن تصبح مركزاً إقليمياً مهماً لعلاج الصرع وفق أعلى المعايير العالمية.»

وعن الجانب الإكلينيكي يذكر الدكتور أحمد سعيد، عضو اللجنة المنسقة لـ«أسبوع الـ sEEG الهندي‑المصري»، أن أولى الحالات التي خضعت لزرع أقطاب الـ sEEG في مصر كانت لطفلة تبلغ من العمر خمس سنوات تعاني من بؤرة صرعية عميقة في الفص الجبهي لم تكن ظاهرة بوضوح في الفحوصات السطحية، مضيفاً أن «التسجيل العميق مكَّن الفريق من تحديد مكان بداية النوبات بدقة، ووضع خطة جراحية تحافظ على الوظائف الحركية واللغوية للطفلة».

كما يشير الدكتور أحمد نصّار، عضو اللجنة المنسقة لـ«أسبوع الـ sEEG الهندي‑المصري»، إلى أن البرنامج لم يقتصر على الجانب الجراحي فحسب، بل شمل تدريباً مكثفاً على تفسير رسم المخ العميق، والتعامل مع المرضى في وحدات العناية المركزة العصبية، واستخدام أدوات الذكاء الاصطناعي مثل تحليل صور الرنين المغناطيسي (MELD) وتقنيات تحديد مصدر النشاط الكهربي (ESI)، مؤكداً أن «هذه المنظومة المتكاملة تجعل من البرنامج المصري واحداً من البرامج القليلة في المنطقة التي تعمل بمستوى المراكز العالمية».

وفي السياق نفسه، أشاد الدكتور علاء رشاد، أستاذ جراحة المخ والأعصاب وأحد الجرّاحين المصريين المشاركين في العمليات وعضو اللجنة التنظيمية، بالتكامل بين الفريقين المصري والهندي، موضحاً أن «التخطيط الدقيق للجراحة باستخدام أنظمة الملاحة المتقدمة، والتعاون الوثيق بين طبيب الأعصاب والجرّاح وطبيب العناية المركزة، هو ما يضمن سلامة المريض ونجاح التدخّل الجراحي».

كما ثمّن الدكتور هشام نافع، استشاري الفسيولوجيا العصبية والمسؤول عن تنظيم جلسات رسم المخ ورسم المخ في العناية المركزة وعضو اللجنة التنظيمية، الدور التعليمي للأسبوع قائلاً: «لقد كان الحرص واضحاً على تدريب شباب الأطباء على كل خطوة، من قراءة الفيديو‑EEG إلى تخطيط الجراحة، ما يضمن استمرارية البرنامج بعد انتهاء الزيارة.»

فيما أكّدت الدكتورة الشيماء شعبان، إحدى المشاركات في تنظيم ورش العمل وتدريب الأطباء وعضو اللجنة التنظيمية، أن الاستجابة من جانب الأطباء المصريين والعرب كانت «فوق التوقع»، مع حضور بارز من ليبيا ودول الخليج ورغبة حقيقية في تبنّي هذه التقنيات في بلدانهم.

بالإضافة إلى ذلك، أبرزت الفعاليات الدور المحوري للدكتور أحمد الغنّام، استشاري جراحة المخ والأعصاب وعضو اللجنة التنسيقية والذي أشاد بروح الفريق الواحد التي سادت بين مختلف التخصصات، قائلاً إن «نجاح مثل هذه البرامج يعتمد على سلسلة متكاملة تبدأ من اختيار الحالة بدقة، مروراً بالتجهيزات التقنية عالية المستوى، وصولاً إلى الرعاية الدقيقة بعد الجراحة»، مؤكداً أن ما تم تحقيقه في هذا الأسبوع يمثّل نموذجاً يمكن البناء عليه لتطوير برامج مماثلة في مستشفيات أخرى داخل مصر.

كما لم يَغِب الدور التنظيمي عن هذا الإنجاز؛ فقد كان للأستاذ ضياء الغنّام، عضو اللجنة التنظيمية ومنسق الاتصال مع الرعاة والجهات الداعمة، إسهامٌ واضح في إخراج الأسبوع العلمي بهذا الشكل المتكامل. فقد تولّى التنسيق اللوجستي بين الفرق المختلفة، وتنظيم سفر واستقبال الخبراء الزائرين، إلى جانب إدارة الجوانب الإعلامية والتواصل مع الشركات والمؤسسات الشريكة. ويؤكد الغنّام أن «نجاح أي برنامج علمي بهذا الحجم لا يعتمد فقط على الكفاءة الطبية، بل يحتاج أيضاً إلى إدارة وتنظيم دقيقين يوفّران للفريق الطبي بيئة عمل مستقرة تسمح له بالتركيز الكامل على المريض والتعليم والتدريب»، مشيراً إلى أن ما تم إنجازه يشكّل أساساً متيناً لتعاون أوسع في المستقب

Today we mark a historic milestone in epilepsy care for Egypt and Africa.

On behalf of the Egyptian Children Society Against Epilepsy (ECSE) we extend our deepest thanks to everyone who made the Indo‑Egyptian SEEG Week possible — our attendees, the organising team, Town Hospital, and our extraordinary Indian partners from Rela Hospital and the visiting faculty.

What we achieved together
- We performed the first SEEG implantation in Egypt and across Africa — a landmark clinical and educational moment that moves precision epilepsy care from aspiration to reality.
- We delivered a packed hybrid programme: three multidisciplinary MDTs, a practical Neuro‑critical Care workshop, a two‑day SEEG Masterclass with hands‑on Brainlab/Cadwell/CURRY sessions, live SEEG implantation and SEEG‑guided HH (hypothalamic hamartoma) RFA, and a final resection decision day.
- Fifteen expert faculty from Rela/Gleneagles joined our Egyptian teams to teach, proctor, and mentor — sharing decades of SEEG and HH‑RFA experience.
- Multidisciplinary Egyptian faculty from multiple universities worked side‑by‑side with the Indian team to select patients, plan trajectories, read SEEG signals, and deliver care — proving our national capacity to adopt and sustain these techniques.

Why this matters
- SEEG is not a single operation — it is the culmination of rigorous Phase‑1 evaluation, multidisciplinary teamwork and precise planning. ECSE’s role has been to convene these teams, standardise the pathway, and create the infrastructure for training and safe implementation.
- This week lays the foundation for a one‑year fellowship programme with Rela that will train Egyptian neurosurgeons, neurologists, EEG technologists and ICU teams — ensuring sustainable local expertise.
- More than a technical first, this is a systemic shift: from isolated cases and overseas referrals, to an in‑country, ILAE‑level service that will benefit thousands of patients across Egypt, the region and Africa.
