6 July - World Rural Development Day
Today, we recognize the vital contribution of rural communities to sustainable development, food security, environmental stewardship and resilient societies.
World Rural Development Day reminds us that rural development is not simply about geography. It is about addressing poverty, hunger and inequality while ensuring that people living in rural areas have equitable access to essential services, opportunities, decent work and meaningful participation in the decisions that shape their lives.
The Day also calls for the empowerment of women, youth and indigenous peoples, including improved access to land and resources, while valuing traditional knowledge and advancing gender equality and digital and financial inclusion.
Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires placing rural communities at the center of development policies, investments and locally driven initiatives, and ensuring that no one is left behind, including those living in the world’s most remote areas.
