The Bartons first visited Egypt in December 2013 to volunteer with a horse rescue. The plight of the horses and donkeys affected them very much, more so with the realisation that many of these horses were the descendants of our very own Australian ‘war horses’ left behind after the First World War. They determined that they had to put their plans for a semi retired life in Australia on hold and return to Egypt to help in whatever way they could and so, ‘Egypt Equine Aid’ was born.

Blind and surviving on garbage in the pyramid area ‘Hamza’ (aka Blindy) was rescued by a group of kind foreigners. He is destined for his new home in Hurghada along with six other horses rescued at the same time who have already been rehabilitated, castrated and transported there (see Snickers post further down the page). Poor Hamza suffering many hoof abscesses as well as white line disease first needed many weeks of hoof care. He copes with his blindness so well and we take our time with him making sure he always knows where his food and water is. He wasn’t so keen on having his feet done but we found the trick is to feed him treats to distract him😅 we have had great results with this donated product ‘Silverfeet’ applied daily his feet are looking wonderful. Thank-you to our awesome supporters who carry these products over for us🥰

So often people will tell us about the great life Arabians have and how they are treated so well in Egypt……. Guess what! That only applies to the elite few. Any faults such as lordosis like this youngster makes them a reject and they are sold off into a working life. This poor baby barely two has suffered a penetrating wound from the iron rods he was pulling in the cart……. Humans don’t deserve these majestic animals💔. Egyptequineaid.org/donate/

Many hands make light work and when this poor boy came in with this huge gash Dr Sandi was lucky to have American Vet Dr Nicole visiting us (for the third time)🥰 with a bunch of students who she had just been teaching about sutures. They started at opposite ends and worked their way to meet in the middle. It was still a huge job and we are sure this boy will make a good recovery. Egyptequineaid.org/donate/

Straight off the truck it took us a minute to figure out this poor girls problem. Her pelvis has been completely cracked in half and it’s unbelievable that she could stand at all. The owner told us she had flipped over backward……. She came lying on the truck but jumped up of her own accord injuring our assistant in the process. She was euthanised within minutes of this video💔. Our vets were already running for the pts meds…..Her suffering unimaginable 😞

As many of our followers will know. Australia left behind 10,000 horses after the War and some of the horses we help would be their descendants. Likewise our beautiful and unique Australian brumbies are also descendants of those brave horses, horses that helped to build Australia as well as carrying our troops to war. The movie taken from the Poem by A.B. Banjo Patterson 'The man from Snowy River' also featured our brumbies.
When no longer needed with the arrival of motor vehicles horses were turned loose to fend for themselves especially in the Snowy Mountains of NSW. Beautiful, resilient and majestic the Brumbies thrived in their own world but now they are in terrible danger. Barbaric arial shootings targeting Brumbies are being carried out which leave them horribly wounded and left to die, foals left without mothers and herd hierarchy totally destroyed. Please sign this petition to let Australia know that the whole world is watching and that we totally disapprove of this barbarity.
I will also put a link in the comments to another petition for people who live in NSW only to sign, once it reaches a certain amount of signatures it must be looked at in parliament.
Please help save these unique horses.
Thank you so much Jill

Stop the barbaric cruelty!

When we talk about tourists fuelling this hideous trade this is a prime example. We were treating this horse for heat stress and had led him out of the sun and giving water when tourists arrived out of their hotel and climbed aboard his carriage. While watching take note of his nostrils to see how heat stressed he was then take note of the tourists coming from their hotel in the background. I asked several of these tourists if they feel bad making these poor horses work in this heat and got only shrugs as reply. You might think they are just going for a trot around the streets but in fact this panting horse is heading to the steep heavy sand track alongside the pyramid (shown in the previous video)……. We wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t live to see another day such is the nature of their work in this heat 😞 Egyptequineaid.org/donate/ NB: thanks to Dr Nicole from loop abroad for this video.

Sometimes we can’t leave a water bucket in the box because the patient tips the bucket over constantly. Instead they are offered water regularly throughout the day and night. With this one his groom has to go a step further and play with the water to encourage him to drink😅….. Egyptequineaid.org/donate/
